THE JOURNAL

From Mr Michael Fassbender to Mr Lee Won-Geun, here are the best-dressed celebrities in suits at this year’s Italian event.
As the oldest and arguably most prestigious international film festival continues in Venice (it runs until 10 September), we thought we would take a look at what some of the world’s most illustrious men were wearing to promote their projects there this year. Held on the chic city’s Lido Di Venezia, this particular festival expects, nay implores, everyone to dress their absolute best. And if that wasn’t enough pressure to impart upon those treading the red carpets, this year, Mr Tom Ford has been popping up around the place to support his second directorial project Nocturnal Animals – and no-one wants to offend the ever-immaculately turned out designer-cum-filmmaker with some sloppy suiting.
What has particularly pleased us at MR PORTER this year is the array of tailoring on display – and not just sleek black tie. It may be appropriate and smart to wear a bow tie and a suit, but it takes imagination and confidence to experiment with your tailoring. Here are three things we’ve learnt from the sharpest looks this year.
YOU CAN PARE DOWN A DB JACKET

Mr Nicolas Winding Refn is the man responsible for Drive – one of the coolest films in recent memory. It is therefore little surprise that this gentleman knows how to dress himself. Fresh from promoting his new psychological horror movie The Neon Demon, he presented a newly restored version of Mr George A Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead with Mr Dario Argento at Venice International Film Festival last Friday. As well as showcasing the classic movie, Mr Refn displayed a decidedly modern – and surprisingly laidback – take on the double-breasted suit. The jacket here is tailored to perfection – not too wide, not too slim – and he has ditched the bow tie in favour of an open-collared shirt. The polished Derbies – a contemporary, slightly more relaxed alternative to Oxford shoes – finish things off nicely.

A DECENT CHECK IS YOUR FRIEND

A solid black suit with a black tie is no doubt a standard smart pairing, but you do always run the risk of looking like a member of the security team of whatever starry event you may be attending, as opposed to one of the esteemed guests. What Mr Fassbender demonstrates masterfully here, at the premiere of The Light Between Oceans, is the art of breaking your tailoring up – in this case with a subtle check – so it sits on the eye that bit easier. It also adds a welcome bit of character to the often relatively prescriptive male uniform for such occasions. Take note of the rest of Mr Fassbender’s accessories as well – the perfectly polished Oxford shoes and artfully folded white pocket square illustrate that every dapper detail has been considered.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF WAYS TO MODERNISE YOUR SUIT

If you’re after some guidance on how to go tie-free with a smart black suit, look no further. A conventional white shirt and collar buttoned up to the top can look a bit strange with a suit – as if perhaps you just forgot to pack your tie. But a contemporary granddad-collar shirt such as this one – worn by South Korean actor Mr Lee Won Geun, in Venice to promote his latest film The Net – makes everything look cleaner, and looks suitably deliberate. It’s a youthful, fashion-forward look, certainly, but one that still manages to appear elegant with a perfectly tailored jet-black suit. The cropped trousers further update the style.
