THE JOURNAL

The shorts and trunks to cover your tail end as we dive into the tail end of summer.
It’s never too late to buy swim shorts. And given we’re in denial at MR PORTER HQ about the end of summer, we’re here to talk about them. Because, as well as buying camp-collar shirts, we’re booking holidays and spending our weekends swimming in lidos, regardless of the temperature outside. We cannot accept that autumn is on its way. We refuse to welcome the month of September. So committed to summer are we, still, that we are doing what we did just a few months ago and investing in swimwear once again. Because you can’t swim in summer – because it still is summer, OK? – without some nice new swim shorts, can you? Whatever stage you are in the seasonal grieving process, whether it be denial, anger or depression (we’re clearly still at the first stage), we have a pair here for everyone. Snap them up and keep the dream alive.
THE SOPHISTICATED SWIMMER
Not only are these swim shorts made from seersucker – yes, that refined, lightweight material usually found on the jackets of gentleman who wish to look smart and keep cool in summer – they’re also made by a brand with some lofty ambitions when it comes to swimwear. “The idea for Orlebar Brown became clear when from sitting by the pool, we had to change to have lunch in the bar,” says brand founder Mr Adam Brown. So, if you like to swim in style, there are few better ways to do it. Just make sure you have a shirt to slip on if you have post-pool plans.
THE WILD ONE
Perhaps you’re not one to shy away, you’re still young at heart and you want to show off a bit more personality when you’re on the beach or in the water. If so, look no further than these white and red whale-print swim shorts by Vilebrequin, a brand founded in 1971 in St Tropez, that knows a bit about sun and blue skies. If you find both of these elements in your quest to extend summer, you’ll also need a decent pair of sunglasses.
THE MIDDLE GROUND
Founded in 2009, Onia is a modern beachwear brand committed to creating timeless pieces for the beach (and/or pool). The sophisticated colour and cut of these shorts, inspired by our old friend the chino, tread a neat path between the options above. If you don’t want to make too much of a splash, but still like your swim shorts smart and trim, these might be the ones to go for. Make sure your footwear follows suit with these understated espadrilles.
