MR PORTER rounds up the best tailoring from the events you wish you’d been invited to last month.

It’s great to be a star in September. Having spent all of August on holiday trying, and failing, to escape from the paparazzi (who inevitably have caught you doing something you’re not supposed to be doing), you can now step out proudly into the public sphere and be captured doing all sorts of publicist-approved activities, such as stalking the red carpet at your latest premiere. Or graciously purchasing a seat (via your assistant) at some fundraising dinner. And wearing a beautiful suit. Yes, September was a big month for tailoring in the On The Town world, as its prominent males dived back into the glamorous routine of things. Here’s how the best of them fared, and how you can replicate the look (if not the canapés and screaming fans) at home.

Perhaps, at some point (presumably before he shot to fame in Donnie Darko), someone said to Mr Jake Gyllenhaal, “Why don’t you grow up and get a real job?” We say this because here he’s pulling something of a blinder in terms of stylish, professional attire. Is he making a point? Whatever the reason, his decision to pair a sober grey suit with subtle blue tones and a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses gives this whole look a dapper, Mad Men-esque feel. Add to this the beard – a trend which, it seems, has finally made it to Hollywood, judging from this month’s On The Town – and you have the sense of a man who is well and truly at the top of his game. Way to show them, Mr Gyllenhaal.

After biblical hero Samson cut off his hair, he immediately threw a huge tantrum and ended up pulling down a building on himself. After director Mr Cary Fukunaga did it, he bought a very elegant tuxedo and took it to a gala in Monaco, for the 2015 Princess Grace Awards. Now, which of these seems like the more sensible response? Exactly. Kudos to Mr Fukunaga for following a sharp crop (he used to sport French braids) with a sharp dinner outfit, keeping it crisp and minimal in the accessories department. There’s a reason this kind of thing never goes out of style.

For a man like Mr Lapo Elkann, the entrepreneur, marketing guru and grandson of former Fiat CEO and style icon Mr Gianni Agnelli, the above outfit is really just business as usual. For the rest of us mere mortals, there’s plenty to learn, such as how to pick a tie pattern (match its colour to your suit). Or how to fold your pocket square (actually, if the rest of your outfit is as impeccable as this, it looks great if you just sort of stuff it in there). Or why, when you’re out and about, loafers are a slightly more versatile, comfortable and cosmopolitan option than lace-up shoes. In summary: if you happen to see this man out and about, watch closely and imitate. Just be a little careful, as from behind those enormous aviators, he might be watching you, too.

The three-piece suit has some rather stuffy associations (probably because most of the time you see them being worn by older relatives at weddings), but here Mr Tom Hardy demonstrates how sharp and sleek it can be if worn right. The two key modernising elements are the slim tie, which lengthens Mr Hardy’s torso and stops it being swallowed by the waistcoat, and the deep, glossy midnight blue colour, which is about as far from the tweeds of Mr Toad as you can get. The black shoes also help keep things slick and contemporary.

Having seemingly trialled suits in every colour of the rainbow during the first eight months of 2015, Mr Eddie Redmayne stepped into more neutral territory for the premiere of new film The Danish Girl at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, opting for a double-breasted suit in a light beige (if we were being pedantic, we could call it “stone”). For many readers, this may seem a little out of the comfort zone, but this kind of colour can work very well if, like Mr Redmayne, you add a little depth to it with accessories in darker tones that complement it, such as oatmeal (in the tie) and russet brown (in the shoes).

If you’re not an aficionado of Italian cinema, you probably haven’t had much opportunity, as of yet, to feast your eyes upon Mr Francesco Scianna, who starred in 2009’s Baarìa alongside other things you almost certainly won’t have seen. But the actor offered himself up for global consumption by stepping out at the Giorgio Armani women's show this September, and what a sight it was. His outfit, an unusual, slightly loose-fitting suit in navy, manages to combine nostalgia (in the military-tinged cut of the jacket) and romance (in the drop-crotched tapered fit of the trousers). It’s an elegant counterfoil to Mr Scianna’s quintessentially Mediterranean good looks, and a perfect example of how a younger man can pull off a double-breasted blazer

The last film we saw Mr Nicholas Hoult in was Mad Max: Fury Road, so it was a particularly pleasant experience to see him this September not only alive (and not pumping blood into himself from living human batteries), but with hair and clothes to boot. Mr Hoult has the perfect body shape (tall, lean) for a skinny, slim-lapelled tuxedo and someone has obviously, and rather kindly, informed him of this. May such felicitous combinations of person and tailoring continue forevermore.

If you’re a comedian, like Mr Andy Samberg, a key skill is knowing how far to take the fun. Here, he shows us how it’s done, opting for a patterned dinner jacket that is just jazzy enough to add a bit of personality to his red-carpet look, while remaining admirably suave. The secret to pulling something like this off is exercising restraint (as Mr Samberg has) in terms of colour, and opting for Oxfords in patent leather. Sometimes the latter can look a bit Gatsby-ish, but in this case they provide the right amount of dressy to balance out his top half.
