Trends For Spring? Groundbreaking

When the season turns, we know two things are coming: warmer weather (we hope) and jazzy new duds. Spring, in particular, tends to be a fertile time for the fashion industry. This year, jazzy colours, innovative mix-and-matching and unusual embellishments are some of best themes to emerge and, believe it or not, they’re easy to work into your existing wardrobe. We know new “cool” things every few months can be a little overwhelming to navigate, so here is MR PORTER’s edit of the best trends of the season.

Mr Hedi Slimane is best known for his skinny-skinny suits and slimline everything. Which is why it was such a surprise and a delight to witness him taking these signature proportions and blowing them right up for CELINE HOMME this season. Wide jeans? Yes, sir. Oversized mesh T-shirt? Why, of course. Boxy leather vest? Gimme, gimme. Once again, we’re embracing a maximalist approach to this trend by choosing shapes for top and bottom that are extra roomy and oversized. Forget what you thought you knew about balance and proportion. This big-everything trend is all about attitude, so make sure you pair your giant new digs with a mean mug.

Remember when boy bands and friends on Friends wore sweater vests? Remember the omnipresent zip-up track jacket hip-hop artists of the same period wore? Well, we’re putting it all together in one nostalgic bonanza. They’re strange bedfellows, perhaps, but we think they look quite handsome when layered. New-to-MR PORTER brand Wales Bonner is responsible for both the jacquard knit vest and crochet-trimmed jacket seen here. They are literally made for each other. Add some Mr Buddy Holly flair with heavy-framed eyewear by Rhude and you’re ready to roll.

Bright colours are the natural progression for spring and summer. Juicy hues, as seen on this artfully deconstructed Balenciaga hoodie, Bottega Veneta slides and earbud case and Dries Van Noten trackies, are just the thing to give you a sartorial sugar rush. We like wearing them all at once because, well, why not? The trick is to pick colours that fall in the same category (ie, gem tones with gem tones, no need for pastels here). If decking yourself in the fruitiest fruits of the loom is too much too fast, then slip on the sandals first, or pick up the just accessory case. Dip your toes or dive into colour head first. You can’t go wrong.

We’ve turned a corner on jewellery in the past couple of years. Where it used to be just a signet ring or a single chain, perhaps, it’s now a case of the more you can clink on, the better. Heavy-link bracelets and rings, punky earrings and long necklaces allow you to express your style in a new way. Jewellery is, after all, something you wear on top of the clothes on your body, so think of it as simply another opportunity to get creative.

Structured garments with roots in workwear have been around for yonks – and it’s likely not going anywhere. It is evolving, however, as seen here in what we’re calling werkwear. Distressed or slightly off kilter, this iteration is less structured than the original trend. The pieces are still functional, you could still get away with walking into a woodworking shed and picking up a handsaw, but they lean more towards style than substance. Look for the best examples from Japanese brands visvim, Undercover and Sacai but LA-based brand Gallery Dept. is churning out some good stuff as well.

Sports night

So long preppy, buttoned up, varsity style, hello loose and louche varsity fashion. The new high-school sports-inspired look isn’t the stuff of clean-cut, popular kids, so you can store your year books this season and look to the runways for closet tips. The bombers are neat and tidy and the pleated trousers have a baggy drape. Hoodies harken to collegiate gift-shop wares, and together they make a look that’s a little bit Psych 101 and a little bit too-cool-for-Psych-101.

Have you noticed a trends trend? A more is more, maximalist trend that spans almost every one on this list? Well, here’s another that sits comfortably under that umbrella: embellishments. Zips where no zips are needed, belts around the chest, clasps and pins and all sorts are added to garments that are otherwise fairly straightforward. Think of this kind of embellishment as jewellery for your clothes. It’s all a little hardcore, with a whiff of kink about it. Punk has clearly returned, only this time it’s more understated – all the better to sneak into your buttoned-up office job.

Nerd core

Steve Urkel wishes he could look this cool in the nerd-inspired togs of today. Oversized blazers, buttoned-up shirts with starchy collars and socks with sandals are all looks you may have been avoiding since you got your braces off. But Bottega Veneta, Craig Green and Jil Sander, among others, may convince you to embrace your inner dork once more. It’s a winning style that counts Tyler, the Creator among its fans. So, nerdy is cool, it would seem. What will they think of next?
