THE JOURNAL

From Mr Ezra Miller to Mr Pharrell Williams – the celebrities looking sharp this month.
July is a cruel month. Much crueler than April, which Mr TS Eliot decreed the worst on that front. The reason for this is simple: it’s hot. Boiling, in fact, with this heatwave that has been toasting us all in Europe and North America. This is what makes the stylish men that follow so worthy of note – they have fought the heat and won, or at least made themselves look blithe and cool, where so many around them were likely sweating like our porcine friends. With another month of perspiration likely on the cards, get some inspiration on how to beat the heat in style from the men that follow.
Mr Pharrell Williams

How Mr Pharrell Williams looks so young is one of the great mysteries of the modern world, up there with what exactly happened in Interstellar and when will the next Ms Kate Bush record come out? At any rate, what is not up for debate is that the 45-year-old never misses a beat when it comes to dressing. Here he is at the Lovebox music festival in London performing with NERD, surfing the streetwear trend with the airy cool of a 22-year-old with a pocket full of tenners outside the Supreme store. Can we be like Mr Williams when we grow up please?

Mr Nick Sullivan

US Esquire’s fashion director has the vague air of Mr Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry here, hands in pockets, genial air of distain; he is nonchalant to his core, which is surely the marker of true cool. Certainly his outfit is just that, the green chino trousers landing just at the right point on his suede boots and the open-neck blue shirt flapping lackadaisically under his dark blue blazer, it is the sort of outfit that seems casual, but has been put together with care. Blue and green really should be seen….

Mr Alasdhair Willis

Mr Willis might be the creative director of Hunter, purveyor of fine wellies and outerwear, but he knows as much about dressing smartly as he does for the moors, clearly. Here he is accompanying his wife Ms Stella McCartney [out of shot] to Wimbledon, in a blue-white double-breasted suit with broad lapels, and a pair or flattering square sunglasses perched atop his nose. He looks like an off-duty Italian prince who has popped off his yacht for a breather – we like it.

Mr Stanley Tucci

Mr Tucci has that rare gift: always looking good. If but we all could share that god-given ability. The key is that his outfits are built from strong building blocks. Note this outfit. The blue relaxed-fit, workwear jeans, flicked up above white sneakers; the chunky dark brown belt setting off the blue of his trousers; the darker polo shirt; the striped blue sweater thrown nonchalantly around his shoulder; then topped with flattering oval sunglasses. Each item is a little statement in itself, and yet with his sure hand for style, he has made them work in concert. We’d certainly buy a ticket…

Mr Oscar Engelbert

You can always tell someone has a lifestyle that will make you green when they describe themselves as “splitting” their time between cities. Property developer Mr Oscar Engelbert does just that with his creative director-cum-street-style star wife, Ms Giovanna Battaglia. They trot the globe, to use that old phrase, mainly between Stockholm and New York, where they have houses. Here they are cantering in Paris for the shows. Mr Englebert looks very slick in his white sneakers, above which he has arranged a scoop lapel blue suit that matches his eyes, and may be linen, over a still lighter blue round-neck T-shirt. He looks smart and casual and we would definitely purchase a flat off him. But would he deign to sell it?

Mr Ezra Miller

Mr Miller is one of those actors and singers who is invariably described as “enigmatic”, which now seems to mean, “doesn’t document his breakfast, lunch and tea on Instagram”. Still, despite being deprived of him in our day-to-day, he always comes up trumps when he does pop up. Here is at LAX with what looks like a script in one hand and a sandwich in the other, a pair of front-pleat trousers over high brown leather walking boots, a print T-shirt and then what looks like a tailcoat. Oh, and a cap and yellow-tint aviators. He looks eccentric and absolutely marvellous: because he wears it with the confidence of a duke.

Mr Andres Velencoso

Mr Velencosco is a Spanish model who speaks five languages and looks like god. It’s quite unfair, doubly so since he dresses so well, too. Here he is at the Vogue 30th Anniversary celebration in Madrid in a white silk tuxedo jacket with peaked satin lapels and a pair of slim-fit black trousers over a pair of beautifully shined dress shoes. If there is a better example of formal dress in a hot country this summer, then it is news to us.

Mr Eason Chan

The Hong Kong-born singer and actor has, essentially, mastered formal dressing in summer in this picture at the Polo Ralph Lauren suite at Wimbledon. From the soles of his Derbys to the hairs on his head, he looks flawless – smart, fashionable, ready with an indulgent smile. What he is also indulging us with is this outfit. The wide-leg cream trousers, with their beautiful turn-up, double-breasted grey check suit and pocket square and knit tie, well, they work harder than Mr Rafael Nadal. Bravo.
