THE JOURNAL

Our favourite looks from out and about in Italy’s fashion capital.
The AW17 menswear shows are more or less three-quarters of the way through. Which you might think would mean that the various editors, influencers and hangers-on who congregate at such events are running out of things to wear. Of course, that’s not the case. Like the grizzly bears we recently saw emerging from hibernation in Mr David Attenborough’s excellent BBC TV series Planet Earth II, these guys have been preparing for this moment for the entire year. They’ve spent countless hours shopping, trying on, throwing together and planning roughly 30 days of unique, MR PORTER-worthy outfits. All for the sake of a few studiedly nonchalant street-style pictures. As you scroll down to see our favourites from this weekend in Milan, perhaps consider the fact that such style doesn’t just happen by itself. Yes, there’s a lurking pathos to these style tips. Anyway, enjoy.

GOING THROUGH A GOOD PATCH

Though increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to the growing influence of Japanese brands on men of the West, the patchwork effect is not always easy to carry off. Here, however, it’s been done with aplomb, thanks to the consistency of colour throughout the outfit. Incorporating many different shades of grey (via the coat and blazer worn underneath) and blue (via the jeans and shirt) gives a feeling of richness as well as simplicity.

SHEAR ELEGANCE

It’s easy to imagine how you might wear a shearling jacket with a pair of faded selvedge jeans, a denim shirt and a lasso. But probably not so obvious how it would go with a pinstripe suit. Here is the solution to that conundrum – an outfit thoroughly businesslike at its core, but with a rugged, cowboy-ish exterior. It works because of the careful juxtaposition. The suit is as slim and sharp as can be, worn with a classically formal spread-collar shirt and a clip holding the tie neatly in place, and makes a clean and pleasant contrast with the bulky shearling jacket.

BROWN ON THE TOWN

You can imagine this character is not often a pedestrian – that, in fact, when he’s not roaming the streets of Milan clutching an invite, he’s behind the wheel of some powerful old Maserati, giving those leather driving gloves a proper workout, seeing the subtle brown of his coat reflected in the glorious Umbrian landscape, enjoying the feel of that chocolate-coloured scarf streaming in the wind. Well, you’re going to have to imagine. Because this is the only picture we’ve got. But you get what we mean, yes?

CHECK IT OUT

A supremely traditional fabric (Prince of Wales check) worn in a supremely non-traditional way (with a black T-shirt and Chelsea boots). An outfit so simple, elegant and contemporary enough to draw envious glances from voluminous passers-by, as illustrated above. A look so sharp and well put together, in fact, that it could stop traffic. Clearly, the wearer is street-wise enough to know to rely on the zebra crossing to do that instead, and is patiently waiting his turn.
