THE JOURNAL

A new decade is coming, folks, and a new decade deserves a big resolution. Sure, you can pledge to eat less and work out more. Maybe you’ll be nicer and remember to write in your journal every day. Perhaps this is the year you ask for that pay rise. Yes, do all of that, but do all of that while striding purposefully into 2020 looking like a more stylish version of yourself. That’s what the MR PORTER team is doing. Below, we’ve set our style resolutions and, by George, we’re sticking to them.

This is better than it sounds, but I’ve spent a lot of 2019 wearing my girlfriend’s clothes. Swapping jackets and the odd pair of trousers with her is all well and good, but whenever I come into the office wearing something that gets a few compliments, it’ll almost certainly be something that isn’t mine (she’s much cooler than me and has an enviable collection of vintage Yohji Yamamoto and Comme Des Garçons pieces). Sad!
I need to sharpen up my own wardrobe for both our sakes, so in 2020, I intend to dip my toes into the world of formal menswear. I’ll start by investing in this double-breasted checked jacket from Noah. I’ll also update my specs to something a little more studious, such as these D-frame glasses from Gucci. And as a wardrobe staple that’ll keep me looking smart, a polished pair of Officine Creative Derby shoes will do nicely.

My New Year resolutions are usually to be healthy and lose weight but, having failed miserably at these for the past decade, maybe it’s time I throw caution to the wind and just do less, eat more and give myself a break. At least this way I won’t be so disappointed in myself when I break my resolution two weeks in with a takeaway or a “just having one pint” kind of evening.
I’ll make it even easier for myself this new year and continue on my current style path of technical outerwear, retro sneakers and thick sport hoodies. Basically, trying to re-live my younger years with a little more style. That’s why I’ve picked this Stone Island garment-dyed shearling parka in dazzling salmon pink – perfect for standing outside my favourite pub mid-January. Once I layer that with this thick Aimé Leon Dore x Drake’s zip-up hoodie, I’ll be out there all night, rain or shine. And, of course, any long stint outside your favourite watering hole wouldn’t be possible without something ultra-forgiving and stylish on your feet. These Nike Daybreak sneakers are perfect and they can double up as running shoes if the mood so takes me.

I will be kicking off 2020 with a new set of housekeys and a blank canvas. So, along with the gym, cutting down (not out) on the chocolate and getting more stamps in my passport, I’ll be looking to fill my new home with a whole world of goodness, starting with three items that have been sitting in my Wish List longer than they should have.
First, I finally have a record player and now I need a Devialet Phantom Reactor 900 speaker. Not only does it produce a crisp sound, it is beautifully crafted and will be a conversation starter. Similarly, The Skateroom produces some eye-catching, collectible, limited-edition skateboards that feature Snoopy and artwork by Mr Jean-Michel Basquiat, but it’s the deck printed with Mr Andy Warhol’s banana that I’m after. This design was first created in 1966 for The Velvet Underground’s debut album and the reissue of that particular record just happens to be the most recent addition to my record collection. It will look great on the wall above the record player, especially when “Sunday Morning” is blasting.
Finally, I am a big fan of red wine and I think an essential for any oenophile is a wine set. L’Atelier Du Vin creates some of the sleekest tools for opening, serving and preserving wines and champagne. The Oeno Box Connoisseur N°1 Wine Set comes with all you need to see in the New Year celebrations as well as many parties to come in the new decade.

I think a lot about what my wardrobe would look like – and therefore what I would look like – if money were no object. Over and over again, the visions in my head are full of men’s trousers in rich fabrics, oversized blazers and crisp T-shirts (see also perfect hair, glowing skin, a dirty martini). Alas, I’m a person who exists in the real world, so I can’t always get what I want. Or can I? Perhaps 2020 will be the year I make careful decisions about what to splash out on while resisting the siren song of a certain fast-fashion joint that constantly seeks to trick me into thinking I’m not spending money (my bank account begs to differ). OK, yes, 2020 is my year. I will start with lush corduroy trousers from AMI, which have an irresistibly lustrous sheen. I’ve never met a grey sweater I didn’t like, and I’ve really been leaning into mock-necks such as this style from Deveaux. I’ll wear an Aries tee underneath (Aries is my star sign, natch), add a pair of mules via NET‑A‑PORTER and voilà. A new, chicer woman for a new chicer year.

Each new year and consistently every winter, I simplify my way of dressing by opting for sensible, interchangeable, darker-toned items that function well with the weather and still look fresh, day in and day out. These Mr P. Jacques boots are sturdy and stylish, an ideal and effortless addition to my greyscale winter wardrobe and the matching greyscale New York weather. I also recommend continually investing in wardrobe pieces that work for you. My preferred dress shirt these days is from our Kingsman label in collaboration with shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser. The silhouette is slimming for my husky frame, the spread collar is perfectly spaced, whether worn open or with a tie, and the navy cotton-corduroy adds warmth and texture to dressing up in winter. And, if all else fails, default to black. There is something to be said about sticking to one colour, especially when accessorising, and driving it home. My reading glasses? A black pair from Oliver Peoples. My wallet and passport cover? Black Prada. My black bags are by Yoshida Porter & Co. while my shoes and sneakers are mostly black leather and Nikes. For a multi-functional watch that is both sporty and can be worn every day, I’d opt for this black dial and leather strap from IWC Schaffhausen. It’s not just about co-ordination, it’s a simplified style hack.

The New Year will be all about my new mantra: less is more. I will be by buying fewer, better products that will last longer and I’ll be embracing the fact that menswear seems to be smartening up again. Nothing too stuffy, so anything from Japanese brand Camoshita, a perpetual favourite, will do, but in particular its relaxed suits made from great quality fabrics that don’t look old-fashioned. Add in some Auralee, also Japanese. I’ve loved its pieces since they arrived on MR PORTER earlier this year and this half-zip sweater is a useful piece that won’t date badly. Oh, and what could be longer-lasting than IWC’s Pilot’s Mark XVIII watch? It could actually last for ever.

In 2020, I am committed to learning Italian, to achieving full financial literacy, paying off my student loans, getting back to my college football-playing weight and wearing only silk pyjamas, like a Bond villain or Mr Julian Schnabel. These Derek Rose pyjamas in particular. This is a lifestyle and I am fully committed to it. Have you seen Divorce Italian Style? Mr Marcello Mastroianni’s pyjama game in that movie is the only thing on my mood board this year.
I’ve also had this silk robe on my Wish List for weeks (what, like I was just going to have the PJs?) and I now blame (or thank?) you all for forcing me to buy it. I can’t greet the Uber Eats delivery man barefoot, can I? I’ve been really into the Anderson & Sheppard loungewear department of late, and the ready-to-wear (or ready-to-sleepwear) pieces are *chef’s kiss*. This pair of cashmere slippers will go with everything in my closet.

The first thing I will wear in the new decade will be the last thing I wore in the previous one – a sharp black tuxedo from Mr P. It’s smart enough to ensure I feel suitably elegant at posh parties, but versatile enough to be worn more than a handful of times a year, thanks to its modern cut and stylish details. Keeping with this theme, it’s time to invest in a new timepiece. Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of a handful of luxury watch brands that not only create some of the most handsome watches out there, but also create watches that keep their value, so a shrewd investment, really. Finally, I never start the year without a Smythson notebook, always monogrammed. As the years roll on, so does the memory, so having somewhere to make notes and doodles is essential. And therein lies my New Year resolution for 2020: buy less, but buy better.

Forget about resolutions, I just want to make it through January. That means only two things matter to me at the moment: warmth and comfort. I’m intrigued, therefore, by these faux-shearling-lined boots from Japanese sandal maker Suicoke, produced in collaboration with Aimé Leon Dore. Come to think of it, the New York brand’s new down jackets – a joint effort with Italian mill Woolrich – are also rather nice. I particularly like this quilted one in green. Then, because I’m sure even all this won’t be enough, I’ll add a fleece from Saturdays NYC.

For me, 2020 couldn’t be kicking off with anything bigger, as Ms B and I are awaiting the arrival of our third child. Couple this with training for my first half marathon (only a month after our son is due) and health, wellness and comfort will be my New Year resolutions for sure. My companions for this journey will be good set of walking boots from Diemme for those country walks to get some fresh air, a Nike ripstop hooded jacket to keep the rain out and the warmth in for those last few miles of training and a Patricks Triple Correction Eye Balm to, well, try and correct my tired-looking face from the lack of sleep every parent experiences with a newborn.
