As far as designers go, we are in very good company at MR PORTER. It is our job, after all, but finding the best clothes in the world is something we’re rather proud of. Still, it’s always exciting when we get to work directly with a brand on something special, and we are very pleased to present a menswear collection with Prada. The collection is only available through us, and is the Italian brand’s first exclusive menswear collection with an online retail partner – it lands on the site today, and is comprised of 32 individual pieces of everything from shirts to shoes.
If you couldn’t already tell, the collection takes its cues from the nostalgia and energy of the bowling alley. Clothing-wise, that means references to the 1950s and 1980s in the form of satin jackets, printed T-shirts, mustard and petrol gingham trousers, laser-cut cardigans, and rockabilly-esque bowling shirts in a variety of prints and tones. And that’s just the clothes – the shoes include colourful cap-toe sneakers in homage to the classic bowling shoe, as well as chunky-soled creeper Derbies in polished black leather. The retro references aren’t subtle by any means, but the clothes are easy to style because they toe the line between classic and contemporary – something that both MR PORTER and Prada know how to do well. The fabrics are tactile, the prints bold, and the overall style as smooth as a freshly-polished bowling ball. We’re biased of course, but we think it’s a strike.
