The outstanding outerwear to wear should you be standing outside this January.
We are very glad we selected this question from @khaled.bejdough on Instagram because, as luck would have it, today feels like it could be one of the coldest yet this winter. At MR PORTER HQ, anyway. If you’re reading this in Australia, for example, a winter coat may not be at the forefront of your mind. But you cannot please all of the people all of the time. What we can try and do, though, is satisfy those in search of warmth. And hopefully our answer, below, does just that.

**What is an excellent coat to wear this winter? ** **@khaled.bejdough, via Instagram **

Thanks for asking this question, @khaled.bejdough, because we are rather fond of talking about coats over here. Honestly, we could wax lyrical. Because the MR PORTER offices, as you know, are in London. And London is in Britain and Britain at this time of year is colder than your fridge (although today it feels colder than a freezer, but I digress). While this is inconvenient and discomfiting for our extremities – pity our poor noses! – it means we can go about in an extra layer of clothing and any extra layer of clothing is always an opportunity.
You see, clothing is not simply a means to prevent you from freezing to death or being arrested for gross indecency, it is also the primary means for a man to express himself. After all, we look around us and we notice how our fellow men are dressed and, for good or ill, we make a judgement on that basis. A sharply cut suit or the newest piece of Off-White says something about you and who you want to be. Coats are particularly good for this purpose. Especially if they are swishy. The question is though, what route do you go with your outerwear, for there are several and all, in their own way, are yellow brick roads.
The first item we’d like to bring to your attention is made from shearling. Shearling, as you probably know, is made of sheep skin with the wool on. It is incredibly good at keeping cold at bay. This shearling-trimmed suede trucker jacket from Tom Ford is a belter. If you do prefer something a little swishy, then check out this double-breasted number in houndstooth alpaca blend from Incotex. If you want a less structured silhouette with a textured finish, try this double-breasted boucle overcoat from our own label Mr P. It will work in just about any situation, from work meetings and dinner dates through to weekend walks – it is a sartorial great.
And now for something completely different (cue Monty Python); if you want to look like you live on the bleeding edge, then this quilted shell hooded down parka by Canada Goose ought to be your focus. Why? Because it’s cosy. And because of its very of-the-moment burnt-orange colour. Choose one of these and you will stay warm and look cool, at the same time.
