Introducing The Style Council: Mr George Byrne

Words by The Daily Team

10 April 2017

Everything you need to know about the LA-based photographer .

You may not be familiar with the photographer Mr George Byrne, or his work, but if you’ve ever walked the streets of LA, you may well recognise the scenes and the atmosphere that he captures. Focusing his lens on sun-scorched pastel walls, solitary palm trees, and stark traffic lights, he photographs with a keen eye for clean lines, space, and symmetry – highlighting both the beauty and isolation (his shots also often feature a lone figure) that LA embodies.

Mr Byrne was not always so familiar with the East Coast, however. Born in Sydney, Australia, he studied fine art, history, philosophy and anthropology at the city’s university – a background which continues to influence his work (he has said in the past that his pictures are often informed by painters such as Mr Piet Mondrian). After graduating, he travelled extensively before landing in LA in 2010 with little resources or knowledge of the area. Judging by his Instagram account alone – which commands almost 90,000 followers – this is certainly no longer the case.

With this in mind, we picked Mr Byrne’s brains for the inside track on the best places to eat and drink in LA – which you can read about over on his Style Council profile. If you want to know more about the photographer and his tastes, we asked him some quick-fire questions, below.

What’s your…

…No. 1 travel tip?

__

Find out where the locals are.

…Favourite shirt brand?

I’m in love with Norse Projects shirts – the cotton is beautiful and tough and they age really well. They also work great with shorts (I’m a big shorts man).

…Tailor recommendation?

__

Mr Lee Custom Tailor Shop, Fairfax LA.

…Favourite shoe brand?

__

I love Nike sneakers (I’m on my fourth pair of Air Max). Other than that, I wear Blundstone’s boots.

…Dream car?

__

I would love a 2017 Toyota Hilux Sport, and for the weekend a dark blue Mustang GT.

…Biggest vice?

__

India pale ale.
