As performance brand Sail Racing lands on MR PORTER, we round-up the best pieces from its 50 KTS and America’s Cup Oracle Team USA collections.
Originally founded in 1977, Swedish performance brand Sail Racing has spent the past several decades refining its hi-tech, indefatigably weatherproof sailing gear to near-perfection, working closely with professional athletes, fabric specialists and an in-house testing team to produce apparel that can stand up to the most extreme conditions. This year, crowning a history of professional partnerships, the brand is both the official clothing supplier for the 35th America’s Cup and for Oracle Team USA, the current defenders of the cup. If last weekend’s America’s Cup World Series races in Fukuoka, Japan, have got you in the mood to a bit of seafaring yourself, good news – MR PORTER is now proud to offer both the official Oracle Team USA collection and Sail Racing’s state-of-the art 50 KTS Race Edition. Slip into some of the below products and you should be set – whatever the big blue has to throw at you.
THE BASE LAYERS
Between the blazing sun and battering winds, your skin has a lot to contend with when sailing at high speeds, which is where a good rash guard comes in. The below example, from Sail Racing’s ultra-technical 50 KTS line, comes in a windproof-yet-breathable, laminated super-stretch fabric, which has been treated to be water-resistant. Wear it next to your skin and sail safe in the knowledge you’ll be protected from the elements. If you’re looking for something a little more flexible (and are sailing in slightly better conditions), you might want to opt for the official Oracle Team USA technical tee, which comes in a lightweight, quick-dry polyamide fabric, and has a rubber-taped anti-glide hem to keep it firmly in place.
THE OUTERWEAR
If you’re curious about the efficacy of GORE Windstopper® fabrics, we suggest you head on over to Sail Racing’s own site and watch the “The Wind Tunnel Test”. Having seen that, we’re sure you’ll see the appeal of the below Orca Soft Shell Windstopper jacket, rendered in a lightweight, 3L Windstopper® material with reinforcements in synthetic polymer Vectran® for extra durability. Wear it under a waterproof, such as the above Oracle Team USA jacket, which comes in a light, hardy GORE-TEX® Paclite fabric.
THE SERIOUS KIT
For those keen to take their sailing one step further – and several knots faster – Sail Racing’s 50 KTS Race Edition can truly deliver the goods. Developed over three years in collaboration with a wide variety of leading minds, from athletes and industrial designers, to an expert in medical tape and the GORE-TEX® development team, this is serious kit designed for the most intense high-pulse racing. The Orca Jacket, rendered in GORE-TEX® all-way stretch fabric (which is water- and wind-proof as well as flexible), is one of the star products of the range. Packed with technical details, the jacket has super-strong Vectran® reinforcements at the hem and sleeves, waterproof YKK AquaGuard® zippers and elasticated strings hidden inside the pockets, for the fastening of racing tools. For head-to-toe performance, pair it with these hybrid bib trousers, an equally detailed and super-lightweight pair with micro-tape-sealed seams for extra breathability, and moulded neoprene supports at the back to aid with warmth and comfort.
