Sometimes it pays to do your homework before visiting a restaurant. Especially if said restaurant is popular, frequented by a discerning type of clientele, and is not overly inexpensive. Much like Grill Royal, a sophisticated grill restaurant in Mitte, Berlin, whose website proudly advertises the following quote from Lonely Planet: “A platinum card is a handy accessory at this ‘look-at-me’ temple.” This gives you an idea of the place. But, before you make up your mind up completely, listen to the thoughts of a regular. Such as Style Council Member and fashion editor Mr Sven Schumann…

Why do you love Grill Royal?
It’s a two minutes’ walk from my house, the food is great and I usually run into friends. It is located in the heart of the Mitte district, in the summertime you sit right by the river and the art on the walls creates a certain atmosphere that is not so easy to find in Berlin. It is one of the only places in the city where the service is good, so normally all servers are pretty knowledgeable. Plus, there is a smoking room and if you want to, you can stay late.
Do you have a favourite spot to sit in?
The round tables by the bar are best as nobody really notices you – it’s slightly hidden from the main area. Plus, they can usually put you there even if you don’t have a reservation, which is a handy tip to remember if you want a table at short notice.
What’s their best dish?
I always seem to order the Chateaubriand with a side of sweet potato fries and spinach.
What do you order to drink?
I’ll have a negroni to start, and then drink a good bottle of Pomerol with the steak.
When is the best time to go?
It works any day of the week, but if you want to see a certain exciting scene of Berlin, come on a Friday night. It’s also great for a quick early dinner when it’s still empty.
How do I ensure I get a reservation?
The restaurant is usually booked up so if you don’t know anybody there make a reservation in advance. At least a few days earlier should do the trick.
