What do Japanese curry, rare streetwear and Mr Pharrell Williams all have in common? That’d be Nigo, a veritable streetwear legend who is, by turns, the founder of A Bathing Ape (BAPE), a friend of Mr Williams and the owner of a small chain of Japanese curry shops in Tokyo called Curry Up (the spicy beef is particularly good, we hear).
Nigo’s name might not be in the mouths of the high-fashion crowd, but to a dedicated set of streetwear nerds, he’s practically reached god status. The designer/DJ/creative polymath was part of the Ura-Harajuku set responsible for putting Japanese street fashion on the map and has collaborated with everyone from Nike to Mr Jun Takahashi.
The latest venture on Nigo’s CV is Human Made. A cult streetwear brand (and the uniform of employees at Curry Up), it’s a favourite of Nigo’s longtime friend, Mr Williams, and is marked by its interesting homeware, intricate embroidery and workwear wardrobe staples. As part of MR PORTER’s The Japan Edit – an exclusive collection, celebrating 15 Japanese designers – we’ve created a capsule in collaboration with Nigo. It includes a white denim jacket with an embroidered heart (the brand’s logo), a camp-collar shirt and T-shirts emblazoned with a bowl of ramen.
Get it while it’s hot, as they say.
