Comforting clothing to keep you warm in winter.
Oh, good gracious. The holidays were nice but this, er, afterwards bit? No, not pleasant at all. When you have the prospect of mince pies and buckets of alcohol in front of you, trudging through the cold to get to the office, or anywhere, is a supportable inconvenience. With all that taken away, it’s just horrible. Well aware of this fact, we’ve thrown together an edit of ultra-warm, ultra-comforting clothing that, in this period of blizzard-like conditions, you would be wise to invest in. Call it retail therapy, call it sheer survival instinct, but whatever you do, make sure you wrap up. It’s going to be a long month.
01.The freeze-proof jacket
The wares of Canada Goose are so potent against the cold that they’re not only frequently worn by film crews (who have to do a lot of standing around in less than favourable conditions), but also much beloved by the Canadian Northern Police (who helped the brand develop its Constable parka). The Selkirk parka may not be quite as hardy as the brand’s famous Expedition style, but it’s far more city ready, with its short length, big buttons (which are easy to fasten with gloves on) and panoply of useful pockets. Most importantly, it’s rendered in the brand’s wind- and waterproof Arctic-tech shell, filled with down and guaranteed to protect you in temperatures of up to –5°C. Wear it over a smart ribbed wool sweater from Officine Generale, which can also be worn with a shirt if you’re chilly in the office.
02. The stylish fleece
Japanese brand And Wander produces a range of outdoorsy gear that’s just as focused on performance as it is on aesthetic. This Polartec fleece, which comes in an attractive teal colour, is a case in point, thanks, on the one hand, to its pleasing graphic panelling, minimal branding and, on the other, to its insulating fabric and warm funnel neck. It’s a great piece for layering to build up real warmth, but will probably work best with a technical base layer such as this one from outdoor expert Arc’Teryx, which is made from a moisture-wicking Phasic fabric.
03. The toasty boots
There are boots and then there are shearling-lined boots. And then there are shearling-lined boots made by Moncler. And boots that are exclusive to us. The pair above fits all the above descriptors, which makes them utterly excellent, of course. Why? Because shearling-lined boots are like slippers you’re allowed to wear outside. They’ll keep your feet toasty warm and dry whatever the weather throws at you and, thanks to Moncler’s eye-catching design tweaks – pebble-grain leather, blue and white striped soles, fun striped laces – they’ll make you look good, too. Wear them with a pair of chunky socks from British brand The Workers Club, safe in the knowledge that you will have the cosiest, happiest feet that it’s possible to have in January.
