THE JOURNAL

Our global round-up of who wore it well last month.
Remember November? No one ever does. It’s a bit of a non-month. Though it starts with fireworks in the UK, finishes with a plateful of turkey across the Atlantic and there’s often a whole lot of nothing in between. Unless, of course, you’re part of that rarefied circuit eligible for inclusion in On The Town. While we were all drumming our fingers waiting to get at the first chocolate in our Advent calendar, or at least be handed a festive drink by someone, this lot were at the British Fashion Awards, attending premieres and climbing out of impressive black vehicles with tinted windows (we’re looking at you, Mr Liam Hemsworth). The good news is, in the course of all this, a lot of them dressed very well indeed, delivering a hefty dose of style inspiration to us mere mortals. The following outfits are the ones that we are truly thankful for.
Mr Paul Bettany

It’s a pleasing combination: a good cause and a good outfit. The former is the premiere of actor Mr Paul Bettany’s directorial debut, Shelter, a film about homelessness in New York City, endorsed by local charity Coalition for the Homeless. The latter is a suave, slim-cut double-breasted suit, which perfectly complements Mr Bettany’s rangy figure. We particularly like the cravat and smoky 1970s shades. Once you’ve directed a movie, you can get away with this kind of thing. The rest of us should approach more warily, keeping the sunglasses for the beach and the neckwear for only the most festive of occasions.

Mr Fernando Verdasco

Wondering how to – aha – ace this season’s grey-on-grey trend? Look no further than Spanish tennis pro Mr Fernando Verdasco, who put his own – heh – spin on the look in Madrid this November. This works because it’s simple. There are just three grey pieces here, but each has its own contrasting texture. The flashes of white are also appealing – this is a man who knows how to keep his sneakers clean, something we at MR PORTER feel similarly particular about.

Mr Eddie Redmayne

Never far from our minds when compiling each month’s On The Town, Mr Eddie Redmayne really made us sit up and take notice this month by stepping out in one of our favourite suits of the season, from 2015’s buzz brand Gucci. Tempering the showiness of its checked fabric with simple accessories in navy, he’s wearing this with the nonchalance that is essential for carrying off this kind of thing. Probably time to give him another Oscar.

Mr Johannes Huebl

Oatmeal: not often thought of as a particularly dashing colour. But look at what Mr Johannes Huebl can make it do. Key to the success of this look is the way that it combines several different intensities of the central shade, creating an overall effect of depth and subtlety (not to mention a certain desert-storm feel). The shirt, adding a tiny accent of blue at the collar, stops it all from becoming too overwhelming and biscuity, as does the decision to allow his new wife, Ms Olivia Palermo, to take charge of the co-ordinating khaki-clad dog, which, in this case, might have sent the outfit into “too much” territory.

Mr Alasdhair Willis

Ah, yes, the classic tuxedo-and-brothel-creepers look. Wait, sorry, what? This daring (and new) combo, proposed by Mr Alasdhair Willis at this year’s British Fashion Awards, probably shouldn’t work, but does, thanks to the extreme sharpness of the bow tie and slim, minimal cut of his jacket and trousers. We wouldn’t recommend such flouting of sartorial codes all the time, but if you’re going to spend dinner surrounded by a bunch of eagle-eyed fashion harpies, why on earth not? It’s certainly one way to break the ice.

Mr Justin Theroux

Should you still be wearing skinny jeans in your forties? Mr Justin Theroux thinks so, and, in light of the picture above, we’re inclined to agree. The reason he carries off this youthful look so successfully is that there’s a certain weathered ruggedness to the accompanying items: a pair of scuffed boots, a slightly oversized flight jacket; a hat that’s somewhat reminiscent of the Marlboro Man. In short, he’s pulled off a style coup and kept his masculinity afloat. Bravo, sir.

Mr Liam Hemsworth

Man of the moment, thanks to the recent release of the final Hunger Games movie (and frivolous rumours concerning a romance between him and co-star Ms Jennifer Lawrence), actor Mr Liam Hemsworth is stepping up to the plate with this tasteful navy outfit, taking on the season’s shearling trend in his flight jacket, and adding a bit of colour with his brown sneakers. We can’t in recent memory recall white socks appearing in On The Town. But here, they clearly say “I’m off duty”, which we like. There’s a first time for everything, right?

Mr Michiel Huisman

No stranger to MR PORTER (we featured him back in 2014), Dutch actor Mr Michiel Huisman did us the courtesy of popping along to our event with GQ at The Gent in New York this November. What’s more, he arrived in considerable finery, opting for this sharp three-piece suit, without looking like he’s just turned up for a wedding. A danger when you have a musclebound physique like Mr Huisman’s is that off-the-peg tailoring can sit comfortably across the shoulders but be too tight on the arms, chest and legs. Not here – he’s made sure it fits perfectly.
