THE JOURNAL

How to wear a suede bomber jacket – to work, at the weekend or on a night out.
Here at MR PORTER, we often talk about the virtues of “investment pieces” and “staples” and use words such as “core” and “versatile” when describing items like Ami’s classic navy suede bomber jacket – a simple, elegant design that should last many a season. But here on The Daily, we thought it was time we should, so to speak, walk the walk as well as talk the talk. So the following story is the first in a new series, in which we take a single piece and demonstrate its many possibilities by dressing it up and down, in outfits suitable for a variety of different occasions. Hopefully it should prove that not everything on the internet is complete and utter nonsense.

FOR THE WEEKEND

Suede might seem a little dressy for a casual meeting with friends at a pub or other sub-Savoy establishment, but it can actually look rather soft and cosy when paired with the right pieces. The faded wash on these selvedge jeans, from Jean Shop, help to soften the rich blue colour of the suede jacket in this outfit, while Simon Miller’s shirt does a similar thing with texture, giving the whole thing a relaxed and tactile (as opposed to sleek and sharp) feel.
FOR AN EVENING OUT

Just because a particular piece is somewhat classic, it doesn’t mean it can’t also be worn with a forward-looking attitude. In fact, pairing this bomber with a vibrant print shirt and tailored track pants will bring out its sporty heritage and place you at the cutting edge of the so-called “athleisure” trend. This is an outfit that will serve you well for a variety of casual evening encounters, from dinner out with friends to a gig (mind the Filling Pieces sneakers though) and whatever comes next. Just don’t forget to pick up your rucksack from the cloakroom, ok?
FOR THE MODERN OFFICE

This isn’t yet the kind of thing, of course, that you’d want to wear into a job in the city, but if your office dress code is that little bit more lax than in London’s square mile, you can impress your colleagues by dressing up your bomber with a pair of tailored trousers and black Derbies from Common Projects. The denim shirt is a better option than a white one – that might be trying a little too hard, in this case, but the document holder (which everyone will assume is packed full of amazing new ideas you’ve had) brings that little extra touch of class.
