THE JOURNAL

Whoever said that good things come in small packages certainly knew what they were talking about. We spoke to some passionate watch fans to find out what they’d most like to unwrap on Christmas morning.

I bought a classic Reverso when my daughter was born and had her name and date of birth engraved on the back. The other watches in my collection are larger chronographs, but I prefer the small, discreet design of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso as well as the prestige and rarity of the brand. I would always be very happy to add another to the collection.

Into its third generation, and kind of like Mr Pierce Brosnan, the Overseas from Vacheron Constantin just gets better with age. Perfectly balanced and packing real horological punch into a svelte 8.10mm pink-gold case, the lacquered blue dial just keeps giving. It’s an interesting, less obvious choice for my money.

I think this watch is really amazing and I love the link to Kingsman. I am absolutely blown away how Jaeger-LeCoultre has made this limited-edition watch, and for the film, what a great design and a great watch.

I would choose the Cartier Ballon Bleu because it’s quirky, elegant and timeless. It’s is also a watch that is suitable for a wide variety of occasions. It comes in steel or gold, on a bracelet or a strap, but if we’re talking about a Christmas gift, I think it would have to be the pink-gold version.

The best part about getting a gift – I mean the right gift – is that you get something you would not necessarily buy for yourself for whatever reason, be it price, extravagance, etc. Maybe you are just hopeful that someone who cares about you recognises your style, passion and love of well-crafted things. I would be happier than a pig in muck if I opened a Christmas gift that revealed that familiar red box with a Cartier Tank Américaine in 18-carat rose gold inside. If my family are reading, this is a hint.

My fantasy Christmas present would be this IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN Portugieser 7 Days Automatic. It is a watch that mixes simplicity and sophistication, one that discreetly shines. It has a timeless elegance that I like a lot – I see this as something that I could easily still be wearing in 25 years’ time.

This is totally my kind of watch: simple, elegant and timeless. The aesthetic is versatile for all occasions, but works especially well with my recent wardrobe shift toward more formalwear.
