THE JOURNAL

Our global round-up of the men who wore it well last month.
The seersucker may have been packed away and the rum traded for whisky, but there’s still time for one last misty-eyed look back before we dive headlong into autumn. Providing us with some much-needed no_style_gia (see what we did there?), here are our picks for the best-dressed men of August.
Mr Joseph Gordon-Levitt

**WHERE: In Los Angeles for the Creative Arts Emmy Awards
WHAT WE LIKED:** The NFL coach Mr Vince Lombardi once said, “When you get into the endzone, act like you’ve been there before.” Embodying those words, here’s Mr Gordon-Levitt at the Creative Emmys looking like a man who belongs on the red carpet. There’s nothing fussy about this look: just black tie done simply and worn with confidence and composure.

Mr Robert Pattinson

WHERE: In London for a screening of his new movie, The Rover
WHAT WE LIKED: This is a good illustration of the way that a single item can elevate an otherwise unremarkable outfit. In this case, the item is a sumptuous suede bomber jacket from Gucci, in a rich shade of burgundy. If you are unsure about your ability to channel Mr Pattinson’s (very) laid-back attire, then just lose the untucked shirt.

Mr Ty Burrell

Mr Burrell at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, Nokia Theatre, LA, 25 August Byron Purvis/ Photoshot
WHERE: In Los Angeles for the Emmy Awards (on his way to picking up the gong for Outstanding Supporting Comedy Actor)
WHAT WE LIKED: Here, the Modern Family star, who we profiled in last week’s issue of The Journal, illustrates the importance of getting your accessories right when dressing for the big occasion. The shirt studs are a handsome addition – and we’re big fans of the Perspex specs.

Mr Brooklyn Beckham

WHERE: At the LA premiere of If I Stay
WHAT WE LIKED: The eldest of the Beckham children, rumoured to be dating the actress, fashion model and, at 17 years to his 15, older woman, Ms Chloë Grace Moretz, clearly has taste beyond his years. See also: the outfit he wore to the premiere of her latest film. Proof that all you need for a modern, youthful take on black tie is a plain tee and a pair of box-fresh white sneakers.

Mr Mark Ronson

WHERE: Leaving the Chiltern Firehouse in London
WHAT WE LIKED: Amply proportioned trousers are part of a shift away from the tightly tailored silhouette that has dominated menswear for so many years. We’ve named it as one of our 12 new-season trends. Musician Mr Ronson pulls off the look with panache here, constructing a loose, unstructured outfit out of a variety of shades, a veritable rhapsody in blue.

Mr Johannes Huebl

Mr Huebl and Ms Palermo at an "Icons of Style” event, Melbourne, 27 August Splash News/ Corbis
WHERE: Melbourne, Australia
WHAT WE LIKED: We’ve long supported the argument that the navy blazer is the ultimate style staple, and with this textbook example of off-duty dressing the German model and one half of New York’s dynamically styled duo, Mr Huebl has provided us with yet more fuel for the fire. Bonus points for chivalrously playing second fiddle to his wife, Ms Olivia Palermo. It’d be fun to watch these two attempt to outdress each other, but it’d no doubt shatter the paps' flashbulbs.

Mr Eddie Redmayne

Mr Redmayne at The Hollywood Foreign Press Association Installation Dinner, Beverly Hills, 14 August Jen Lowery/ Splash News/ Corbis
WHERE: In Hollywood for a Press Association dinner
WHAT WE LIKED: Mr Redmayne's critically acclaimed performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything means we're sure to be seeing a lot more of him in the coming awards season. Here he is in LA this August, refining his red carpet mojo in a perfectly fitting navy suit and neat pocket square. What more do you need?

Mr Dominic Cooper

Mr Cooper outside the Chiltern Firehouse restaurant, London, 27 August WENN
WHERE: Leaving the Chiltern Firehouse in London
WHAT WE LIKED: Hotelier Mr André Balazs’ celebrity canteen has fed nearly every boldface name on the planet this summer. Among August’s notable attendees was Mr Dominic Cooper, who showed us that despite evidence to the contrary, wearing a blazer with jeans is totally fine, assuming both blazer and jeans fit well and the denim is of a suitably dark colour. (Is that Mr Jude Law in the background as wingman? Thought so.)
