With the AW22 collections now starting to reach the outside world, we picked out some of the best trends to emerge. Nouveau prep

Everyone knows about prep’s comeback by now, but AW22 showed how it’s being taken in new directions. We’re calling this new trend “nouveau prep” – think classic preppy pieces that have been reworked and modernised by brands including Off-White, KENZO and AMI PARIS. One of the focal points is the bomber jacket, which has been updated with varsity-style influences including logo patches, contrasting sleeves and colourful detailing. While prep’s latest resurgence shows no sign of slowing down, these nouveau prep pieces are a more modern take on the trend.

Sexy suiting

Despite what you might have heard, the suit is not dead. With all the staying in and working from home, suits have been liberated from their boring office jobs. Designers are taking more risks with their tailoring, knowing that it doesn’t all have to be stuffy and formal, with new cuts and new patterns helping to make the traditional suit bolder – and sexier – than it was before. Brands including Gucci, Fendi and Lemaire all sent suited looks down the runway on shirtless models, showing how this can be taken even further.

Grandma’s heirlooms

Men are embracing jewellery more than ever before, and many are adorning their fits with pieces that wouldn’t look out of place in their grandmother’s house. One of the biggest advocates is Mr Harry Styles, who wears a pearl necklace more often than not nowadays, while A$AP Rocky and Mr Pharrell Williams have both shown themselves to be fans as well. During AW22 shows, a number of labels presented their own take on the trend, as the likes of Fendi and Jil Sander showed how grandma’s heirlooms can look better than ever.

Something bright

While bright colours are often associated with summer – and darker tones with the autumn and winter months – it doesn’t have to be that way. For AW22, brands showed how hits of colour can transform your winter pieces, bringing the sun with you as the days get shorter. Whether it was the bright pink puffer jacket from AMI PARIS or Etro’s deep purple trench coat, classic winter-wear arrived brightly coloured to provide a hit of dopamine on those colder days.

The statement boot

The transition to boot season is a marker of the beginning of autumn, so you might as well have fun with your pair through the colours, materials or proportions. They don’t all have to be plain black leather you know. Bottega Veneta – who’s puddle boots have already become a global sensation – has perfected the formula, bringing fun to the winter staple, while CELINE HOMME has infused them with its rock-star appeal and Sacai has managed to transform them into something entirely new. Whichever boots you choose, allow them to make a statement this autumn and winter season.
