March means film-awards season and in the run-up to the main event, actors took to any red carpet they could find to plant themselves firmly in the mind of the Academy judges. It doesn’t do your chances any harm to strike a bold menswear note every time you hit the awards circuit, as Oscar nominee Mr Andrew Garfield has demonstrated with a series of suits that have made him a talking point on each outing. So it is with the best-dressed men of the month, each one utilising colour, silhouette and a certain attitude to cut through the noise and turn themselves into style contenders. Here, we award seven of them the biggest prize in men’s style.

Mr Kodi Smit-McPhee is the slim gent at the heart of the every-award-nominated The Power Of The Dog, and he’s on a press and event tour that could be dubbed “the power of the suit”. With the help of stylist Mr Jared Eng, Smit-McPhee has been pulling a slew of interesting suits out of the hat. This head-to-toe Bottega Veneta look continues with his theme of oversized and we are nuts for the lime-green Puddle boot pairing – proof that you can have a little fun with your accessories when you’re wearing a classic (or semi-classic) suit. You can’t quite see it in this picture, but he’s also wearing a fun earring in his left lobe. We’ve recently been getting heavily into jewellery for men and can’t help but love to see one of our favourite trends out in the wild.

A cape is very hard to justify in the current sartorial climate. This might be the age of the Marvel multiverse, but even a cursory knowledge of comic-book lore gleaned through Pixar’s The Incredibles will tell you that an over-elaborate ferraiolo has no place in the modern crime fighter’s wardrobe. However, Mr Oscar Isaac makes the case for an adaption of sorts. The premiere of Moon Knight, his introduction to the MCU fold, sees the actor adopt not only the stance favoured by Avengers, but also a nod to the caped crusaders of yore via the drape of his coat. No less superheroic is the tonal interplay of reddish browns, or brownish reds, depending on where you sit. Or, indeed, stand, with a courageous gait.

Here’s acclaimed New Jersey musician and filmmaker Mr Topaz Jones dressed head to toe in Alexander McQueen for the – yes, you guessed it – Alexander McQueen show at New York Fashion Week. And look, we appreciate that he was dressed by the brand, a fact that should really disqualify him from inclusion in our monthly best-dressed list. But come on, have you seen the guy? Resplendent in a generously tailored cream tuxedo and black Chelsea boots, Jones’ appearance last month had us pining for the arrival of autumn – and it’s only just spring.

And so to the Miu Miu womenswear show in Paris, where the main talking point the brand’s micro mini skirt. You may come to MR PORTER for conversations about menswear, but we wager you won’t get through spring without seeing this schoolgirl-gone-rogue-with-the-scissors skirt on magazine covers to red carpets everywhere. But where were we? Ah yes, menswear. As worn by Mr Vincent Cassel at the aforementioned event, who in the circumstances decided to play it low-key in a grey turtleneck, black trousers and a nifty pair of lace-up boots. A smart move, knowing you’ll be ceding column inches to a micro skirt, to simply rock up, don shades and look this cool about it.

LA Clippers guard Mr Terance Mann has had a successful season – in his third for the team, he averaged career-high stats in minutes, points, rebounds, and assists. Just as he has established himself as a one to watch on the court, the 25-year-old is rapidly climbing the style ranks of NBA’s best-dressed players, too. The total-pink look he wore to the Ball Arena before the game against the Denver Nuggets – pastel tie-dye trousers, coordinating checked shirt, printed T-shirt and Louis Vuitton messenger bag in hand – has “if you like it, wear it” written all over it. It also suggests he may well have been taking our 20 fun ways that every man can wear pink story to its logical, very fun conclusion.

Frankly, we could devote an entire long-read feature solely to Mr Andrew Garfield’s awards-circuit wardrobe of late. And while his resplendent purple-blazer-and-lilac-shirt combo at the Independent Spirit Awards is what kept the menswear circles abuzz for 48 hours, it’s this rust-orange outfit, worn to Jimmy Kimmel Live! in Los Angeles, that we’re awarding the golden statuette. The truth is that while the style stakes are sky high on the red carpet, it’s really not too tricky to throw an already well-groomed man in exquisitely cut tailoring and have him look a million dollars. But to step out in a suede jacket, plaid slacks and white sneakers and still look every inch the movie star? That’s a rare and (we think) Oscar-worthy feat.

You’ve seen gentlemen artfully leave their bow ties undone to let it hang around their shirt collar. British actor Mr Paapa Essiedu takes it one step further by completely eschewing the tie and just letting the extended collar of his shirt hang loose like a scarf. The rest of his Gucci ensemble is stylishly subdued – you can’t go wrong with traditional tailoring and classic monk-strap shoes – while the open neck and pendant chain add a touch of personality.
