THE JOURNAL

Sartorially, February coincides with a general feeling of confusion for most of us. In the first week, we’re scrambling for the chunkiest layers we can find; towards the end of the month, we might even question whether we should be wearing a lightweight jacket or just a sweater to leave the house instead.
For the beau monde, February means fashion-show season and plenty of red-carpet appearances, which bring with them a wealth of stellar outfits to inspect and get inspired by. Different climates call for different layering options – we’d all love to run our Sunday errands in a shirt with rolled-up sleeves, like Mr Jeremy Allen White – but an earthy, trans-seasonal palette of browns, blues, khakis and blacks seems to be the common thread here. These are the seven famous snazzy dressers who did it best.
01. Mr Cillian Murphy

Mr Cillian Murphy is making a fairly convincing case for resurrecting the double-breasted pinstripe suit. Not since the 1990s has it looked so stylish and appealing. Worn simply with a crew-neck sweater and slightly heeled boots and Ray-Bans, the 47-year-old actor is proving that suits don’t have to be wildly complicated or overly adorned to be interesting. Simultaneously, this look quietly underscores that simplicity is so hot right now.

02. Mr Jeremy Allen White

It seems that everyone’s favourite heart-throb Jeremy Allen White can do no wrong. With a Calvin Klein billboard moment to his name, acing red-carpet dressing and having been featured on our roundups more than once, he’s more than just flavour of the month (look, we’re not above a celeb crush). Here, he is all sun-bleached and sandy 1980s with stone-washed, raw-edge jeans and scuffed Nike Cortez that wouldn’t look out of place tapping their toes in the intro to Footloose. The combination of pristine white tee, crisp but casually worn shirt and cap perfects the off-duty yuppie revival look. Let’s hope the flowers are for his equally buzzy girlfriend.

03. Mr Samba Diop

At first, it looks entirely classic – a crime-solving trench coat over a balanced palette of navy, white and sandy brown. But there are risks being taken by the Senegalese-born filmmaker. Layering the soft knit over the crisp, buttoned-up formal shirt is a deliberate, careful move. Exactly what you’d expect from someone who knows how to frame the shot just so. The white sock and loafer – hardly brave, but confident, and certainly du jour – finish the look.

04. Mr Mark Ronson

Was super-producer Mr Mark Ronson paying attention when we recently published this guide to wearing a suit jacket or sport coat with different trousers, by the menswear guy, Mr Derek Guy? Well, looking at the timing – Ronson was shot in Beverly Hills on Valentine’s Day; our story came out on 27 February – no. But this example of spezzato expertise still stands. The trick is the pattern and texture of his deftly deployed DB, teamed with the unbuttoned shirt, brown slipper-like loafers and hands stuffed in pockets, giving the whole look a laid-back groove. A “Me? Casually drifting into or out of the exclusive 2024 Oscar Nominees Luncheon?” nonchalance. And if confidence is the best thing you can wear, then – deep Ronson cut here – “Ooh Wee”.

05. A$AP Rocky

If there’s one thing that A$AP Rocky does really well – aside from music, offspring… you name it – is mixing and matching different style influences. This Miu Miu outfit he wore earlier last month in LA does just that. The jacket playfully contrasts the solemn two-piece suit, which is rounded off with a striped shirt and patterned tie. It adds dimension and creativity, breaking up the wintery grey-brown hue of the rest of the look. It sure wouldn’t be an A$AP fit without some gold finishing touches and big sunglasses.

06. Mr Kingsley Ben-Adir

Mr Kingsley Ben-Adir has had a busy 12 months. He showcased his Kenergy in Barbie, went toe-to-toe with Mr Samuel L Jackson in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, and now, he’s made it to MR PORTER’s best-dressed list two months in a row. Oh, yes, and he most recently portrayed the titular music icon in Bob Marley: One Love. To mark the occasion, he wore a black three-piece suit by Gucci with horsebit loafers to match. And to break up the formality of his all-black attire, the leading actor took cues from his fellow silver-screen buddies of this awards season, committing to a low V-neck and a short gold chain.

07. Mr Bukayo Saka

Arsenal winger Mr Bukayo Saka was just one of a handful of familiar faces who flocked to Burberry’s latest show at London Fashion Week – but he was certainly one of the most stylish. If keeping cosy was his main goal, this tan shearling coat is getting the job done. And so is the rest of his outfit. A the thick rollneck sweater, stamped with the Burberry Equestrian Knight motif, quilted trousers and chunky sneakers, all in complementary shades of brown and military green. He may not be sporting his team’s usual red and white, but he’s passed with flying colours.
