The Best Summer Jackets

The three layers of outerwear to see you through from late spring to summer proper .

We’re at that point of the year where the weather simply cannot make up its mind. It’s not quite summer yet, but it’s trying extremely hard to be. One day: blazing sunshine, and you’re considering wearing shorts to the office. The next? The temperature has inexplicably dropped, forcing you to dig out that winter jacket you cast aside weeks ago. And such is the temperamental nature of the current climate, the situation often changes over the course of an afternoon. With this in mind, we need to think carefully about what we put on before we leave the house. Which is where this What’s New edit comes in. These three jackets – new on site today – are your versatile friends at this time of year: lightweight enough to wear in warmer weather, and slip a layer on beneath should it become chillier. They’re also easy to carry or stuff in a rucksack if the sun really comes out to play. You’re welcome.

Made with breathable, textured denim, this deep-blue workwear-inspired jacket from British designer Paul Smith is an easy, laidback piece to wear at this time of year. And it looks super-summery to boot. Throw it over a sweater if the weather isn’t feeling too warm – or over a white tee if you’re feeling a little luckier. And if things are really pleasant, it will look rather fetching slung over your shoulder. Go with these lightweight trousers for a casual weekend look.

This jacket from London minimalist brand Folk has more of a utility feel to it. We can see this as the perfect companion on a country walk – keeping the wind and drizzle at bay, while allowing air in to cool your skin – but it would work similarly well on city streets. It has a two-way zip system too, which makes it even more versatile in changeable weather.

Moving across the Atlantic now, we welcome Freemans Sporting Club into our summer jacket edit with its rather fantastic, super-lightweight coach coat, complete with contrast pop buttons. This NY brand has a motto: “Made local, buy local”. This is because all its stock is made within a 10-mile radius of its NY store. So, rest assured, this will be the most authentic NY piece in your wardrobe this summer. And probably the coolest, too.
