THE JOURNAL

The best outfits to keep you warm when you’re out kicking fallen leaves.
Not every autumnal day was made the same. And each one can flatter to deceive. Indeed, ’tis a tricky season we find ourselves in. That watery, low-lying sun you see peering in through your window? What looks like cockle-warming heat can easily be a cruel visual mask for piercing, unforgiving cold. Equally, if you assume just because it is late October that the temperatures will be wintery, you could be working up a sweat before you’ve reached the end of your garden path. With this in mind, our style editors have come up with three versatile and contrasting looks which are made to be worn outdoors this autumn. Considering different tastes and styles – and whether you’re braving breezes at night, or wandering aimlessly during the day at the weekend – there should be something for everyone and, within reason, any situation. All you have to do is drag yourself up from the couch.
EASY DOES IT

This is an outfit that will suit a man who not only prefers a jacket to a full-length smart coat (those a little more vertically challenged, perhaps), but also favours a bit of colour to lighten up an autumn day. If you are going to choose some outerwear with a bit of brightness, you may as well go for a shade that will match the leaves beneath your shoes (these ones are rubber soled, to avoid any slip ups) – much like this shearling-lined cotton twill jacket by Sandro. Continue the dressed-down theme with these Engineered Garments trousers – tough enough to withstand the briskest of autumn day.

SMARTEN UP

There’s something about long, dark Harris tweed coats that put us in mind of a certain Sherlock Holmes. While this does not have the same cape-like appearance as his outerwear of choice, it does imbue the wearer with a similar air of authority – such is its smart and elegant cut and construction. Mystery-solving aside, the inspiration for this coat is more likely to be a 1950s beatnik, as the group influenced Beams Plus’ AW17 collection. So, keep those monochrome loving guys and girls in mind when you pair this coat with a black cardigan, black drawstring trousers and a white T-shirt. And some black and white sneakers by Common Projects. If you’re heading out on a misty night befitting our detective friend, you might well need some luminescent accessories. You have been warned.

KEEP IT CASUAL

If you’ve planned a day where you have little more to do than pick up a coffee and a newspaper, or meet a friend in the pub, something like this might be more your bag. It won’t keep you warm and dry in the worst weather conditions (again, you have been warned) – but it will do for the time it takes you to leave your house and get to wherever you need to go. Clearly a more youthful look, the Acne Studios bomber contrasts nicely with the Norse Projects beanie. Not to mention the camo bag and the fashion-forward sneakers – which work well with the block colour in the rest of your outfit. Tie everything together with a simple pair of blue jeans, and a (brief) foray into that autumn weather will never look so stylish.
