We’ve all been there: you agree not to do presents, but when you wake up, there’s an immaculately wrapped parcel perched on the breakfast counter. Cue panic, hotfoot it out the door and bag the only available half-wilted bunch of carnations left at the petrol station, hoping for the forgiveness of St Valentine. If you’re reading this, however, there’s no need to stress. Instead, be prepared with these suggestions to make your significant other smile.

Cartier’s expertise as a fine jeweller coupled with its use of bulletproof Swiss mechanics give its timepieces grail status among horophiles. While its tank might be the obvious choice, this Ballon Bleu de Cartier – so named for its elliptical shape – has a stylistic point of difference that will be loved by both aficionados and novices alike.

Bottega Veneta’s wallet turns a seemingly ordinary accessory into an object of desire. It’s woven in the brand’s trademark intrecciato weave from fine Italian leather, which, like a successful relationship, will only get better with age. And best of all when it comes to gifting: one size fits all.

Although this cardigan from Brunello Cucinelli is decidedly classic, its pure cashmere composition gives it a distinct advantage over what you’ll find in your local vintage shop. The shawl collar makes it smart enough to wear in place of a blazer – even on date night.

Chunky chains are having a bit of a moment right now and Pearl Before Swine’s iteration might just be what your other half’s neck has been missing. It’s an ideal alternative to the customary bouquet if the man in your life is more of a tough love type.

A well-made blanket is a fine thing and this one from LOEWE is just the thing to snuggle beneath after a romantic dinner. While there might be some complaints about cold feet, they’ll be none about its plush cashmere-blend handle.

If your significant other already has an ever-rising wall of sneaker boxes, you might not want to encourage him. However, these Common Projects kicks are sure to sate his craving for another pair. The combination of leather and ripstop fabric gives the retrospective design a fresh face.

Rather like true love, the varsity jacket has stood the test of time. CELINE HOMME puts a characteristically contemporary spin on the collegiate classic in a Valentine’s-appropriate pink that will be turning heads for all the right reasons well after 14 February.

Pink sapphires signify love in the language of stones, making this Bleue Burnham ring a particularly apt gift for Valentine’s Day. Alongside the gem of adoration, it’s also set with sapphires in a spectrum of shades on a rugged nine-karat gold band.

The warm embrace of cashmere is enough on its own. But when it’s in hoodie form, such as this example from AMIRI, he’ll never want to take it off. Gift this and you’re sure to be coming up roses with your beau.

Mr Tom Ford is known for his use of plush fabrics, but his taste for luxury still has scope for the ecological, too. This tote, which is spacious enough to handle smart weekends away, is made from a recycled fibres. This means it is a considered gift for both the man in your life and Mother Earth.
