Come to our panel discussion with auctioneer Mr Aurel Bacs on the right outfit to wear with your vintage watch.

You may well wear a watch. And you almost certainly wear clothes. (If not, you’ve arrived at a good place to remedy your predicament.) But have you ever considered how to wear a watch and clothes together? Yes, probably, every single morning, much like Mr Aurel Bacs.

It was this daily dilemma that led Mr Bacs to the conclusion that, in 2018 it verges on the ridiculous that there is still no definitive guide detailing which timepiece to wear with which outfit. And, as a watch auctioneer (last year he sold the world’s most expensive watch, the “Paul Newman” Rolex Daytona previously owned by the actor, for just shy of $18m), he was in a position to rectify this.

From that brainwave came a phone call to Mr Wei Koh, founder of men’s style magazine The Rake, and from him to Mr Toby Bateman, Managing Director of MR PORTER. This in turn led to Styled. Timeless Watches And How To Wear Them, a showcase of stylish outfits to be worn with classic timepieces, culminating in an auction of 120 incredible vintage watches, due to take place at Phillips auction house in New York on 5 December.

Having provided 12 looks for the exhibition – which you can peruse here, and see in the flesh at Phillips in New York until the day of the auction – we’re obviously very excited. And never ones to miss the opportunity to bend your ear on the topic of clothes and watches, you will find Mr Bateman alongside Messrs Bacs and Koh for a panel discussion taking place at 7.30pm on 4 December, the day before the auction.
