When Life Gives You Lemons… Wear (Butter) Yellow

There’s the general consensus that whatever happens on the runways somewhat reflects the times we live in. So, in a time of uncertainty and geopolitical turmoil, you’d expect military-style clothes or dark colours that reflect the all-round gloominess of it all, at least. There are plenty of those. But by contrast, there should also be something that brightens the mood altogether.

Such is the case with the colours that Pantone would call “pastel yellow”, “glass green”, “sweetcorn”, “papyrus” or variations thereof. The shade has climbed the style ranks for the past couple of seasons and was spotted across most SS26 runways, making appearances at Auralee, AMIRI, ZEGNA and SAINT LAURENT, among others.

The language of menswear has been spoken in neutrals ever since the very concept of “men’s style” has been a thing. Reliable navy, beige and grey signal taste without risk. Yellow, on the other hand, carries a heavier baggage, often associated with brightness, flamboyance, sometimes exuberance. But when softened to its lightest shade, it behaves differently. It loses its loudness and gains versatility. It functions almost like cream, but with a touch of optimistic warmth that other neutrals can’t quite replicate.

If other neutrals communicate some level of restraint, this pale shade of yellow signals light-heartedness ahead of the warmer days, making it ideal for the changing season.

And what makes it particularly interesting is how it interacts with other colours. Against navy blue and black, it delivers the same smart clarity as white, but with a softer, more relaxed attitude. With earthy tones such as brown, wine and tobacco, it feels organic and understated. With denim, it adds a layer of depth without overpowering the outfit. With cool greys, it introduces a welcome contrast that feels fresh and modern.

A blouson jacket by TOM FORD that loses all stiffness worn over a blue shirt and chocolate trousers; Nike’s Waffle Racers that will add a touch of personality to jeans and a white top. Everyday cashmere sweaters from ssstein and FRAME that aren’t just made for vacations on the Mediterranean; Hartford drawstring linen trousers that will easily replace your everyday chinos this summer. These pieces don’t shout, they sit comfortably among the usual menswear suspects, but make the whole outfit feel more intentional.

If you’re struggling to think of ways to incorporate the shade into your wardrobe, keep this in mind. Pale yellow isn’t about leaving neutrals behind; it’s about expanding them.
