THE JOURNAL

Everyone has their own way of spending the holiday season, whether you’re sticking to tried-and-tested family traditions or breaking free and doing something different this year. Whichever route you’re taking, there are a whole number of sartorial situations to consider: what to wear if you’re eating out this year? Which outerwear best equips you for the big day on the slopes? How can you wear comfortable fabrics and elasticated waistbands without looking like a slob? Don’t worry, we’re here to help.
01. Staying at home

Hopefully, spending the holidays at home means that you’re taking it easy this year. So, if you do get to unwind and put your feet up for a bit, it’s only right that your festive wardrobe should be designed for maximum relaxation. If comfort is king, it’s important to think about fabrics. Cashmere is the obvious choice, whether it’s on a pair of ZEGNA socks, a cardigan from Guest in Residence or as part of a cotton and cashmere blend flannel shirt by mfpen. Keep up the comfortable theme with a pair of sweatpants from Auralee.
Just because you’re spending the period kicking back, it doesn’t mean you need to compromise on your clothing. There are a couple of stand-out pieces that are guaranteed to make an impression wherever you are for the holidays, including a Donegal wool-blend boucle coat from Mr P., a pair of croc-style loafers from Nicholas Daley’s recent collaboration with G. H. Bass & Co. and one of Bottega Veneta’s intrecciato messenger bags. Finish it all off with some of Ellie Mercer’s sterling silver and resin jewellery, which helps to elevate the whole winter wardrobe.

02. Christmas at the castle

If you’re spending the holidays in the lap of luxury, then the little details are all important. Whether it’s a pair of luxurious ZEGNA cashmere socks for extra comfort, or an Hermès Timepieces Arceau Grande Lune on your wrist, these touches can take centre stage, showing that you belong in such refined settings. It’s worth keeping up the accessories with a patterned silk scarf by Drake’s and Berluti leather pouch.
For the rest of your festive outfit, keep it simple and sophisticated. A pair of TOM FORD leather penny loafers are the ideal foundation – they work perfectly with pleated corduroy trousers, a plain white crepe shirt and the kind of cashmere rollneck sweater that was practically invented for this time of year at this type of place. That understated and classic outfit gives you the platform to make a statement with a shawl-collar cardigan that Logan Roy himself would wear – like this one from ZEGNA x The Elder Statesman – and, of course, those all-important accessories.

03. Escaping to the outdoors

From a countryside retreat to a brisk stroll to the pub, it’s important to occasionally escape the home and stretch the legs at this time of year. But whatever you’re doing and wherever you’re walking to, you’re going to want to get your clothing right. Obviously, there’s the cold to think about, so a Paul Smith shearling coat and colourful Missoni mohair scarf are good starting points.
There’s also the actual exercise itself, which means that footwear is going to be important. Brunello Cucinelli mixes luxury with practicality with a pair of walking boots that combine a rugged rubber outsole and a soft suede upper, perfectly managing to hit the middle ground between sensible hiking gear and quietly luxurious footwear.
That’s the practical side sorted, but the mix of comfort and quality is still important when you step out the house. The Row’s jersey T-shirt and a sweatshirt from Ghiaia Cashmere, combined with a pair of De Petrillo’s drawstring suit trousers, mean that you’ll feel sufficiently relaxed to properly enjoy your festive pint.

04. Dinner in the city

Maybe this year you’re doing things differently, heading into town and swapping the same-old home-cooked turkey for a dinner out. The whole thing will be smarter, more sophisticated and, crucially, cooked by someone else. But while they’re doing all the work in the kitchen, you’ll still want to make an effort with what you wear.
If you’re dressing up, start things off with a pair of classic leather shoes courtesy of Tricker’s, a pair of suit trousers from Beams Plus and Jil Sander’s cosy and luxurious alpaca and wool sweatshirt. Continue the classic theme with a brushed camel hair coat and a simple leather belt from Gucci.
So, you’ve got the smart dinner-out wardrobe sorted, and your accessories should complement your sophisticated look. A fringed scarf from Acne Studios adds some hits of colour to your outfit, while a leather bag – like those from Gucci or LOEWE – finishes things off perfectly.

05. The ski retreat

So, you’ve made the decision to head to the slopes for the festive season and you need something that’s going to keep you warm. The most important thing is, obviously, your outerwear. Think chunky and insulated, but without compromising on aesthetics. In other words, you need a Moncler.
As always, layering is an important consideration, so midweight pieces that can go under your jacket – such as Story Mfg.’s Polite pullover or a half-zip sweatshirt from Throwing Fits – are essential for keeping the cold at bay. Finish off the fit with relaxed drawstring cotton-twill trousers from KAPITAL and a pair of Diemme’s luxe hiking boots. Both manage to mix form and function so that you manage to look good, keep warm and stay comfortable.
It’s not all about practical clothing, though, and a couple of accessories are the perfect way to take your practical outfit to the next level. A camouflage cap from Metalwood adds an if-you-know-you-know detail up top, while a messenger bag from Acne Studios means you can carry everything you need to be equipped for whatever the mountains throw at you.
