THE JOURNAL
Terry cloth or towelling fabric – whatever you call this nubbly looped fabric inspired by towels – should be worn on your body, not just tossed over your shoulders when you come out of the shower. Terry is the perfect fabric for summertime. What else can you wear that is also specifically designed to dry you off, after all? It’s also got a 1970s appeal and designers are having a bit of fun with it. Need more convincing? Here are five terry-cloth items that will see you through the end of the season.
01.
The organic cotton-terry Mr P. polo shirt
This is a tangerine-dreamy polo shirt that works equally well over jeans as it does with swimwear. Made from organic cotton and cut in a modern, boxy silhouette, our in-house designers imagined you in this shirt poolside, and who are you to contradict them? Love it? Check out the three other colours and nab them all.
02.
The Fendi logo sweatshirt
Most of us have a couple threadbare university sweatshirts in our wardrobes. But few have one that boldly proclaims “Fendi” across the chest. Well, now you can own such a sweatshirt, wrought in a creamy cotton-blend terrycloth. What to wear this with? Matching Fendi logo trousers should do the trick.
03.
The signature Bottega Veneta poolside slides
Bottega Veneta has been doing some fun things with its classic woven intrecciato design. Now it has made cotton-terry slides with an embossed version of the design. This colour is listed as “Blaster”, but we think of it as more of a pool blue. Why not dip your toes in?
04.
The jazzy patterned Orlebar Brown trousers
A full leg of terry? Sure. Orlebar Brown suggests that if you’re going to go all the way with terry, you might as well add a geometric print. At once bohemian and yacht-guy-chic, we’d call these trousers versatile making them the perfect pant for an end-of summer fantasy vacation.
05.
The navy cotton-blend Howlin’ shorts
And finally, an item of clothing you won’t be surprised to see made out of terry – shorts. These, from Howlin’, update the genre with a generous cut and some nice seam detailing. No drawstring and pockets at the back mean these are not your father’s (or grandfather’s) tight gym shorts – no, they’re something much better.
