THE JOURNAL

The Daily Team.
Though we at MR PORTER do love hopping around in sneakers, desert boots and loafers in the summer, when things take a turn for the colder, only boots will do. With this in mind, for AW17, we’ve partnered with 16 of our favourite brands to create an exclusive collection of 27 boot styles for your delectation. Given there are so many to choose from, in fact, we are rather worried that the following three pieces – all of which are perfect footwear solutions for the increasingly frigid weather – may have missed your attention. Scroll down to learn more about them (and what you should be wearing them with).
THE BROGUE BOOT

Pair one of the world’s very best shoemakers – Bespoke London shoe brand George Cleverley – with one of the world’s very best leathers – American produced Horween Cordovan – and what do you get? A simply superlative boot: sturdy, impeccably made, and able to withstand a lifetime’s use (and abuse) if looked after properly. With their studded, Dainite soles and goodyear-welted construction, these are the rare boots that will look impeccably smart while also standing up to winter weather. And they’ll come into their own when worn with a pair of slightly cropped wool trousers – such as this fine example from Belgian brand Dries Van Noten.
THE MILITARY BOOT

The enduring appeal of New York-based shoe brand Common Projects, is of course, partly to do with its products impeccable balance and simplicity. It would seem a little churlish, therefore to start adding or taking away elements from styles, which is why, when it came to creating an exclusive boot for MR PORTER, the brand started from scratch. Following in the footsteps of its most popular models – which applied a certain midas touch to staples such as the tennis sneaker and Chelsea boot – Common Projects has, in its new boot, created a much more modern take on the standard-issue army affair, with crepe soles adding a distinct touch of lightness. As is typical of the brand, the silhouette here is sharp and streamlined, with just a few key details – such as padding and hook eyelets at the ankle – adding to the shoe’s simple appeal. Keep them sharp by pairing them with a classic grey overcoat from Milan’s Massimo Alba.
THE FLIGHT BOOT

Northamptonshire shoemaker Grenson has been making fine British footwear for more than 150 years, which means that more than just a brand, it’s part of the nation’s history. In fact, Grenson was among the first factories to offer support to the government during WWII, resulting in many products designed to withstand combat conditions. For his exclusive boot for MR PORTER this winter, one such piece in particular caught the attention of Grenson’s owner and creative director Mr Tim Little – a flight boot, created for RAF pilots, which came with a shearling-lined leg that could be detached, via a zip, in case of a crash. Taking this archive model as inspiration, Mr Little has created a special toe cap boot in Russian calf leather which comes not only with the brand’s unique triple welted sole, but a pair of detachable shearling cuffs in white and brown. Strap them on, and get seriously prepared for an outdoor adventure by wearing the boots with a wool jacket from Filson.
