What To Wear For New Year’s Eve

Words by Ms Kate Kelley

28 December 2016

Ring in 2017 in style with the sleekest, sharpest tux you can get your hands on. Oh, and a martini, of course.

New Year’s Eve can, on occasion, be a lukewarm affair, washed down with rather too much lukewarm prosecco. But on the brink of 2017, a year of promise and prosperity (we can dream), we think it’s truly time to celebrate. Christmas might be done and dusted, but there’s plenty more to rejoice over, because The Worst Year Ever™ (as many people have claimed) is nearly done. And we’re still alive. Hurrah. But what to wear to commemorate such an occasion? You might be sick of your festive smart casual by now, and be craving your sweats, but those can wait until tomorrow. For New Year’s Eve, we’re here to tell you (with a nod to Dizzee Rascal) to fix up and look sharp. Which means donning your finest dinner jacket, your crispest dress shirt and your shiniest shoes, and raising a glass of suitably strong liquor to a new dawn. Scroll down for how to master NYE black tie with aplomb.

If you’re going to rise to the occasion, then you really ought to go all out. Which means ditching that well-worn favourite suit and bringing out the tux. Try this exemplary example from British tailoring expert Favourbrook – which prides itself on taking the stuffiness out of formalwear. Cut in a plush cotton-velvet with contrasting black faille, the slim-fit dinner jacket will ensure you cut a dash at whatever fabulous soirée you might be attending, particularly when paired with these wool tuxedo trousers.

Since we’re here to celebrate a fresh start, why not start with fresh white shirt? This example is just the ticket for NYE-wear, with its pleated bib-front and pearl buttons. Just make sure it’s freshly pressed. Wear it with a classic black bow tie to complete the look. The below example, designed exclusively for MR PORTER by British bespoke tailor Thom Sweeney, can be adjusted to ensure the snuggest fit around your neck.

You’ve just suffered through weeks of novelty and festive fun, so you’ll probably be all too pleased to put away those “playful” cufflinks and opt for something a little more straightforward and refined. Choose something elegant and understated, like this pair from Lanvin, which have the added benefit of matching with the pearl buttons of your shirt (if you’ve clicked “add to bag” on everything thus far). How neat. And since the ultimate companion on NYE will be a strong martini, you ought to pick up a couple of these copper martini glasses from Tom Dixon, too. Cheers.
