THE JOURNAL

Want to add edge to your interiors? Try these rare Sonic Editions images of cult figures from Mr Michael Caine to Ms Janis Joplin.
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words – which is an idea we can fully appreciate. But it is not something we want to dwell on too much when it comes to our livelihoods. Because if it were universally, undeniably true, it would put us out of a job. There is, of course, still a place for words in this world (and GIFs. Lots of GIFs). But we concede – there is something intangible about a poignant painting or image that words cannot evoke, and a nice picture will probably look considerably better in your living room than a framed piece of text.
Mr Russell Blackmore, who set up Sonic Editions – a limited-edition classic photography brand – is a man who understands this as well as anyone. He set up his company after noticing there was not a whole lot on the market for those who couldn’t afford works of art to hang on their wall but did not want to go down the student poster route. If you think framed imagery of 20th-century icons is not a new concept, you’d be correct. But Mr Blackmore scours and sifts through photography archives across the globe to find rarer images – which make his frames true collectors’ items. We are lucky enough to stock a lot of exclusive Sonic Editions pieces, and today, MR PORTER welcomes three more on site. Whether you’re a film or a music fan, we’re sure one of these could fill a gap on your wall.
SIR MICHAEL CAINE
There are some men who, in their prime, pretty much always looked amazing. Sir Michael Caine is one such man. This picture shows him at the peak of his powers – on the set for Get Carter looking as masculine and rugged as he does handsome and unthreatening. Even if he is naked, holding a shotgun and frowning. There is a limited run of 200 of these prints, so don’t dither. And if you’re a really big fan of Sir Michael’s, you might like these glasses from Cutler And Gross, too. Which we feel he would heartily approve of.
MR JIM MORRISON
Now we move from the silver screen to the stage with this emotive print of Mr Jim Morrison – a photograph captured Mr Baron Wolman, who was known for being Rolling Stone’s first chief photographer. It was taken in 1967 at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom. This image is perfect if you’re a fan of The Doors. Or perfect if you want to pretend you are. And if you want to pretend you are Mr Morrison himself, you’re going to need a bigger coat – such as this shearling piece from Ralph Lauren Purple Label.
MS JANIS JOPLIN
The above frame contains another image taken by iconic photographer Mr Wolman, and another iconic musician you can hang on your wall. This time Ms Janis Joplin takes centre stage – singing the blues from one of her more intimate concerts in San Francisco in the 1960s. The late singer was always a fan of a floral or psychedelic print – and we’re partial to this striking shirt from Saint Laurent.
