How To Weatherproof Your Wardrobe For April Showers
Words by Ms Molly Isabella Smith
6 April 2021

As we ease into spring, it’s anyone’s guess what the weather will be like when you wake in the morning. During April in particular, spots of glorious sunshine inevitably fade, swiftly replaced with ominous-looking clouds before the heavens unceremoniously open. Unpredictable, yes, but predictably so, thus, something you can prepare for. Here are seven sartorial solutions to this season’s meteorological whims.

01.
The can’t-miss umbrella
OK, this is an obvious one. But chances are you’ve left behind every umbrella you’ve ever bought. We’d love to tell you that investing in a better brolly will make you more vigilant about losing it, but that’s sadly not the case. The trick to minimising the chances of misplacing yours in the future? Pick one in vibrant shade, such as this London Undercover one from our Kingsman line, so it’s easy to spot.

02.
The shower-proof trousers
Made for drizzly days, Loro Piana’s trousers are an altogether smarter alternative to waders. The refined virgin wool-blend fabric is treated with the label’s specialist Rain System, which renders it shower-repellent. Plus, there’s an elasticated waistband for comfort and matching cuffs to keep water from splashing your ankles.

03.
The Gore-Tex cap

04.
The water-resistant anorak
A throw-on jacket, the sort that’s not too bulky, is your saviour in spring. This anorak from Stone Island gets bonus points for being water-resistant as well as lightweight and packable, so you can stow it in your bag ready to chuck on when you spot a particularly grey cloud.

05.
The storm-welted boots
Planning on stomping your way through some puddles? In that case, you better get yourself a pair of storm-welted boots with which to do so. Quoddy’s Maine pair are crafted from waterproof Horween leather, they’re seam-sealed to stop seepage and the metal eyelets are specially treated to prevent rusting. We bet you’ll be stepping out in them for years to come.

06.
The proper raincoat
When Mr Paul Weller spilled his style secrets to MR PORTER recently, he revealed he was quite a stickler for the details. It’s hardly a wonder that he’s teamed up with British brand Sunspel to craft this classic raincoat, then. Tailored from recycled water-repellent shell, it has a sharp cut, neat pockets and smart concealed placket.

07.
The running sneakers
The bad news is you can no longer use wet weather as an excuse to shirk your running plans. The good news is your feet will at least be dry when you’ve dragged yourself off the sofa, thanks to Nike’s Pegasus Trail 2 sneakers. Made from quick-drying ripstop and Gore-Tex, they’re specially designed for wet weather.
