Superhero Blankets For Sofas, Firepits And, Yes, Wearing As A Cape
Words by Ms Molly Isabella Smith
10 November 2020

How does that saying go? “When times are tough, get yourself a blanket.” OK, that’s not so much a “saying” as we’re just, um, saying it now, but the point stands. As we head into the wintry months and socialising outdoors becomes a chilly reality, we’d like to make the argument that maybe blankets aren’t just for tossing over a sofa arm – some of them double very nicely as massive scarves (think Mr Lenny Kravitz). Of course, these will do nicely on the couch as well – that’s what they’re designed for, after all. But the solace of having something soft to swaddle yourself in when it’s nippy out is nothing to be scoffed at, so here we present to you five of the finest.

01.
Missoni Home
There are blankets, and then there are Missoni blankets. This is the latter. Part of our exclusive Italian Masters collaboration, this one is knitted in the brand’s trademark kaleidoscopic colour and patterned with an impressionistic map of Italy. Is it a substitute for ambling around sun-soaked piazzas or sampling the local gelato? Not quite. Will it do in the present circumstances? It’ll do quite nicely, indeed.

02.
Fear of God
Yes, this is a basically a cape. But don’t let it go to your head. Oh, who are we kidding: swanning about the place never looked so good. A hearty thanks is therefore due to Fear of God for allowing us to not just relive our childhood delusion of one day stepping into Superman’s shoes without having to come within an inch of anything spandex, but also helping us stay extremely toasty while doing so.

03.
Pendleton
For more down-to-earth types, there’s Pendleton, the century-plus old all-American brand that needs little in the way of introduction. Suffice to say, it’s a serious blanket-maker for those who take their blankets seriously. This Chief Joseph design – an homage to the leader of Oregon’s Nez Perce tribe – has been one of the label’s bestsellers since the 1920s.

04.
Jupe by Jackie
Another superhero-worthy number, this time from the charming Jupe by Jackie, a fairly recent addition to MR PORTER’s ranks. Knitted from shaggy mohair and hand-embroidered with little crosses, this blanket, draped nonchalantly around your shoulders, is all you need to transform yourself into the walking, talking embodiment of warm and fuzzy feelings.

05.
R+D.LAB
If your living room looks like it belongs in the pages of a glossy magazine, then R+D.LAB is no doubt a brand you’re already familiar with. It makes the sort of things that warrant the cover of Architectural Digest, such as blankets handwoven on vintage shuttle looms from things called “noble” fibres, which, in this case, means linen, cashmere and silk. Fancy, right?
