Five Fresh Items To Get You Outdoors This Year
Words by Ashley Ogawa Clarke
4 January 2022

As one year ends and another begins, it’s customary for most of us to flirt with the idea of reinvention. So here’s an easily achievable New Year’s resolution: go outside more. Whether you’re fostering ambitions to climb faraway mountains or just start jogging in your local park, the time is now. The great outdoors – as many of us have no doubt realised over the past two years – is always there to be enjoyed. And because there’s no better way to stoke the fires of motivation than with some shiny new gear to nudge you out the door, we’ve gone to the trouble of curating the list of products below.

01.
The new-tech overshirt
And Wander is one of the most interesting players in Japanese technicalwear. Its outdoor gear is as functional as it is stylish. You’ll catch it on young creatives in Shibuya as well as veteran hikers on Mount Fuji. This smart overshirt is crafted from shell and jersey ripstop to protect you from the elements and has reflective trims on the pockets to make sure you are the most visible (and best-dressed) man on the mountain.

02.
The eye-catching T-shirt
CAYL is the outdoor Korean brand to watch. The name stands for “Climb As You Love”, which goes some way to explaining how it came to be, founded on an obsession with mountain sports. This breathable orange T-shirt is ideal for an outdoor adventure and is finished off with the brand’s signature landscape logo.

03.
The campfire bag
This handy messenger bag from Nanga is from the brand’s Takibi collection, which in Japanese means “campfire”. True to its name, it’s an ideal accessory for a camping trip. It’s crafted from hardwearing, fire-resistant ripstop and fitted with adjustable bungee cords, as well as a padded strap for comfort.

04.
The trusty gloves
Hestra is proudly Scandinavia’s lone active glove cutter and has been around since 1936. So you can imagine how incredibly good its gloves are. To give you an idea, these tanned leather examples are lined with soft wool sourced from Ethiopian hair sheep and are eminently warm and comfortable. In other words, gloves for life.

05.
The achingly cool trail shoes
Salomon has found itself as the footwear brand of the moment for the next generation of menswear obsessives. In doing so, it has brought a sophisticated dimension to the traditionally maligned trail shoe. This pair have been made in collaboration with And Wander from ripstop and mesh and will look the part whether you’re rambling through the Lake District or traipsing around at fashion week.
