When travelling, a degree of comfort is necessary (a long-haul flight in stiff denim is as good as self-flagellation). But wherever we’re going, we don’t want to turn up looking like a crumpled old bag – and that’s especially true if travelling for work.

The first decision, then, is a pair of soft and loosely structured trousers, such as these from Nili Lotan (wool allows for movement without immediate creasing). We’ve paired them with a simple striped shirt from UMIT BENAN B+ and jersey sweater by TOM FORD, layering a Drake’s bandana under the collar to bring some playful flair to an otherwise classic look. FERRAGAMO loafers, of course, which here echo the black leather and silver-tone hardware of a Mulberry belt. And a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso watch shows you mean business.

The work wardrobe has evolved over the past few decades to encompass WFH fits and the consciously no-rules cool of city startups and design agencies. Even for those among us whose jobs usually require a shirt and tie, there are occasions that blur the boundaries (weekend work anyone? We know it happens). For this we suggest a crisp white shirt with an unexpected pattern or detailing, like this embroidered example from Simone Rocha. Worn loose over a pair of contemporary straight-leg trousers by Marni, all you need is a Burberry bomber jacket to top it off (a staple for relaxed but unscruffy dressing). Whether it’s Michelin stars or wine bars, the most sought-after spots in town usually lean towards the looser end of smart casual. However, you should still show you’ve made an effort. The smart element for these nighttime looks can come from luxe materials, texture and volume. An Isabel Marant brushed mohair-blend sweater will ensure you’re pleasant to rub shoulders with, but we’ve contrasted with a leather blouson from Balenciaga to give the ensemble interest and edge. We’ve teamed with wide-leg LOEWE khakis, left long (to “puddle”) over Our Legacy square-toed boots and finished with a button-quilted Maison Margiela bag in polished maroon leather. A chunky silver ring and stacked chains from Tom Wood make the whole look evening appropriate.
