THE JOURNAL

The brightly coloured shirts, shorts and trousers to pack for your holiday.
From the outside, it may appear that menswear is getting a little out of control. From hysterical sneakers to vibrant Gucci sweaters, attention-grabbing garb is everywhere. Streetwear in particular is to blame, and has hit peak aesthetic insanity recently – everything from fluorescent Balenciaga belt bags to loudly printed Off-White sweatpants are fair game, and the kind of noisy clothing you wouldn’t get away with this time last year is suddenly all the rage.
Still, we think there’s also something inherently summery about a slightly unhinged pattern. This is the perfect time of year for a bit of fun, and how better to convey this than through a printed shirt such as the ones below from Japanese brands Cav Empt and Flagstuff, both of which look as though they’re two days deep into a particularly stylish acid trip. Plus, there’s been a recent proliferation of vibrantly printed swim shorts from brands such as Okun, Orlebar Brown and Freeman’s Sporting Club that will ensure you look sufficiently summery on the beach or by the pool.
Also, this stuff is bold, in a will-probably-turn-heads kind of way. To make sure it’s for the right reasons, it’s safer to stick to more plain, classic clothing for the rest of your outfit – a white T-shirt under a graphic shirt is a failsafe option. Unless you’re sure you can carry it off, it’s best not to play prints like this against one other by wearing them simultaneously. They will both win the fight, which more than likely means that you will lose it. Still, all in good fun.
