Our global round-up of who wore it well last month.

Artists, actors, sportsmen, designers, musicians, presenters… it’s an eclectic crew that makes the cut for this month’s best-dressed list. Their styles are every bit as diverse, too, running the gamut from outré fashion-week garb courtesy of Mr Kanye West to proper black tie courtesy of Mr Clive Owen.

The common thread that connects these eight men? They all understand the importance of looking their best, wherever they are – whether that means posing for photographers on the red carpet (or green carpet, if you’re Mr Alasdhair Willis) or riding a scooter through TriBeCa. There’s a reason why regular readers of our monthly best-dressed list may have noticed the same faces popping up over and again: for these men, dressing well is not an occasional indulgence. It’s a lifestyle choice. Read on to see who we chose as the best-dressed men of September.

The last time MR PORTER spoke with TV presenter Mr George Lamb, he was wearing a Marni camel overcoat while holding forth on his love of early 1980s unstructured Armani tailoring. Such are the goings-on here at MR P HQ. The point is, the man clearly knows how to dress. Take this outfit, for instance: it’s rich in the earthy, sandy tones that are so prevalent in this season’s collections, but it still feels very relaxed, and not at all “fashion”.

Mr Benedict Cumberbatch has been receiving plaudits aplenty for his starring role in The Imitation Game. Here he is at British GQ’s Men of the Year shindig, getting in some red carpet practice ahead of what’s sure to be a very busy awards season. Sticking with all one colour – in Mr Cumberbatch’s case, midnight blue – is a sure-fire way to stand out at black tie events. Try adding a bit of texture with a pair of suede Oxfords.

We featured the New York-based artist Mr Aaron Young a while back – April 2013, to be exact. Our comments then, if memory serves, were "you can’t go wrong with Saint Laurent". It’s a fine lesson to live by, and one that Mr Young appears to have stuck with in the intervening 17 months: his entire outfit is made by the Parisian label.

Every September, the brokerage company BGC Partners and the investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald hold a charity day to commemorate the hundreds of Cantor Fitzgerald employees who were lost in the 9/11 attacks. All profits from the day’s trading go to charity – and a few celebrity guests show up to help out. Of those in attendance, Mr Henrik Lundqvist took home the award for the most authentic impersonation of an actual investment banker – with a side-order of Mr Lapo Elkann. Flawless power dressing from the New York Rangers big man.

Mr Kanye West made headlines for making head lines this September, shaving chevrons into his hair for Paris Fashion Week. Fair enough, we say: when you’re being photographed with the likes of Milan-based editor-at-large for Vogue Japan, Ms Anna Dello Russo, you need to resort to extreme lengths to get noticed. Joking aside, we like his army-green and camel-brown combo – mixing two of autumn’s key colours with panache.

Purists, look away now. Yes, there’s a distinct lack of visible shirt cuff emerging from the right sleeve, and (shock, horror!) we can even see a hint of white shirt below that jacket fastening – but these are not the parameters by which we measure style. Mr Clive Owen may look just shy of perfect here, but oozes insouciance all the same in this cool, midnight blue tux.

JR is a photograffeur – a portmanteau of photographe and graffeur. In other words, he uses photographic prints as graffiti. The Frenchman has developed a personal style that’s as distinctive as his street art – one that relies on lots of denim, lots of indigo and an ever-present blue straw trilby.

Ms Stella McCartney launched her sustainable Green Carpet collection last month, and her husband Mr Alasdhair Willis was there to support her. By not wearing a tie, was he making a stand against the wastefulness of the fashion industry? We’ll never know. He does look good, though.
