The hottest celebrities looking cool this summer – and how you can steal their style.
As if it weren’t enough that many of us spend most of the year gazing at pictures of celebrities and wishing we were (a) rich (or richer) and (b) famous (or more famous – even the very successful aren’t completely devoid of envy, you must assume), come the summer, they all start going on glamorous holidays. And don’t they look like they’re having a splendid time? We’ll have to apologise in advance for adding insult to injury with the below images, but our thinking is that, while they all recuperate post-tour, or shoot, or, let’s face it, post-previous-holiday, we might as well glean some nuggets of sartorial wisdom from them. At some point, after all, the rest of us too will surely get our moment in the sun, and we’ll need to pick out a few things to wear. Surely? Anyway, end of disclaimer: scroll down for our favourite beach outfits so far this summer, and grab something squishy to clench when the anger hits you.
MR ANSEL ELGORT

This young actor and heartthrob has been more and more frequently sighted in recent years trying out various outré ensembles on red carpets across the globe. But when it’s more sandy underfoot, it seems, he’s admirably restrained. Not only has he sensibly covered up for his walk towards the mainland (presumably to pick up a few ice creams, or, you know, four dozen oysters and a magnum of Dom Pérignon), he’s opted for a pair of dusty-blue swim shorts to wear with his white tee. The combination is fresh, light and unworried – much like the blue sky behind, damn him.

MR ROGER FEDERER

Clearly bored of wearing a single colour the whole time in his professional capacity as a tennis champion, here Mr Roger Federer has gone for… oh, no, wait. Actually though, this navy-on-navy ensemble looks incredibly sophisticated in a seaside setting. The clear message is that, no he’s not here to kick around inflatable things, get a suntan and generally show off, but that he’s so used to this kind of setting that he’s just going to cover up and luxuriate in the health-giving sea air. The wares of LA’s James Perse – rendered in a variety of lightweight, ultra-tactile cotton and cashmere – are purpose built for such a situation. And, though it’s apparently not the Federer way, we would also advise investing in some (navy) espadrilles too. But that’s up to you, really.

Mr Johannes Huebl

OK, strictly speaking this is not exactly the beach. But you get to a certain point in model-photographer fabulousness when “let’s go to the beach” really means “let’s hop on a yacht.” Should you find yourself in this fortunate situation, this outfit from Mr Johannes Huebl is the one to copy – perfectly seaworthy with its coordinating shades of light blue and navy, yet wonderfully clean cut and classic at the same time – note the 1950s-style square frame sunglasses. The sporty watch is a particularly handy thing to have when you’re wondering, “Was it just the last 30 minutes that were incredible, or was it more like an hour and a half?”

MR TOMMY ALASTRA

And you thought you’d be able to leave millennial pink on dry land. Nope. The ubiquitous trend of summer 2017 is making its way inexorably towards the ocean, wrapped around the legs of film producer Mr Tommy Alastra. Here he demonstrates how to keep oneself from looking like something available at the ice cream stand, that is, by contrasting this light, dusty colour with a sharp dose of navy. Baseball cap, sunglasses and multiple bottles of water: also very sensible.

MR SCOTT EASTWOOD

Of course, there’s nothing better to wear on the beach than rippling muscles, a surfboard and a hefty dose of screen-legend genes, all of which are sported to perfection here by Mr Scott Eastwood, actor and son of Clint. But unfortunately, even we at MR PORTER can’t sell you any of those things, so let’s focus instead on the fit of the swim shorts. The hem of these finishes just above the knee, which is the length most people should be looking for. The tailored waistband offers an exceptionally streamlined fit around the waist, which is particularly good if you are on the lean but bulky side, as Mr Eastwood is. We’re also keen on the sporty retro stripe splashed across the right thigh – if you’re looking for a similar effect, we would suggest you pick up this pair of swim shorts from Mr Thom Browne. And if that doesn’t make you feel any better about not being part of a Hollywood dynasty, well, what will?
