THE JOURNAL

Reliable and comfortable wardrobe staples to invest in this season.
What with the inundation of eye-catching new products and trends that characterises the early months of a new season, it’s easy to overlook the core items in the male wardrobe. But, as you peruse this week’s new arrivals on MR PORTER, don’t forget that now is as good a time as any to stock up on such things – in fact, thanks to the wealth of products currently arriving on site, the choice at the moment is unparalleled. A case in point is this week’s selection of checked shirts. Yes, this perennially wearable style is hardly a bolt from the blue, but that’s part of the reason why it’s such a useful thing to own. If you decide to pick up one of these choice examples now, you can be fairly certain that you’ll still be wearing it come the end of the season, if not the end of the decade.

Keep it cool
Rendered in 100 per cent linen, this shirt from Polo Ralph Lauren is the perfect way to take checks with you into warm summer weather. Its strident colour also taps into one of the season’s key trends – that is, pink. Pair it with a pair of similarly cool trousers from Japanese brand Blue Blue Japan, also in linen, but with a pleasing tapered fit and cuffs that chime well with the shirt’s Ivy League-leanings.
Get tough
The wares of Japanese brand Neighborhood are largely inspired by designer Mr Shinsuke Takizawa’s love of motorcycle culture. His take on the checked shirt is therefore of a particularly rugged and solid construction and comes in a sturdy cotton flannel. In warmer months, it’s substantial enough to wear as an overshirt – that is, a sort of light jacket. And we would recommend doing so with one of Aspesi’s grey marl tees – there’s something pleasingly vintage and mechanic-y about the raglan sleeves here, too.
Stay authentic
The checked shirt is, of course a classic of Western wear, something that Mr Ralph Lauren clearly knows very well. This example, from the designer’s passion project RRL, has been created with this in mind, and is convincingly styled and aged to look as if it’s already spent a few sun-soaked seasons on the range. Pair it with another American classic, in the form of a waxed cotton jacket from Seattle’s Filson.
