The best men’s jackets from the 2016 MTV Movie awards, featuring Messrs Miles Teller, Chris Evans, Will Smith and more. .
It may have passed you by that, over the weekend, a large marketing activity known as the MTV Movie Awards took place. It’s a bit like the Oscars, but no one cries, and all the trophies go to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Plus, there’s an unspoken rule that nobody has to wear a suit. This allows us to see what various celebrities like to wear in their time off, and this year, it seems like the done thing is to wear some kind of zipped-up jacket. In fact, observing various famous faces clambering on stage to receive and/or present each other with golden buckets of popcorn pretty much amounted to a full survey of the state of zip-up outerwear today. And they say that TV rots the brain…
THE BOMBER

Mr Chris Evans opted for a streamlined take on the classic bomber jacket shape, pairing it with a simple white T-shirt. It’s a look that so strongly suggests the 1950s that it could well be worn by Mr Evans’ alter ego, Mr Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Could this be a subliminal plugging of the upcoming Captain America: Civil War – or is he just being trendy? You decide.

Mr Will Smith was presented by MTV’s powers that be with a “Generation” award at this year’s ceremony, presumably in honour, not of his excellent potato-farming skills, but his prodigious famous-ness. He accepted it in an understated zip-up suede jacket, paired with a cream crew-neck sweater – a 1970s-tinged look that we thoroughly approve of.

THE BLOUSON

This one is interesting – what Mr Ryan Reynolds wore to collect his “Best Comedic Performance” award is actually a cross between a 1950s blouson jacket (which is a trend for spring) and a zip-up track top (which is a trend for winter). You could argue, therefore, that he is currently experiencing the best of both worlds. In any case, it works very nicely with his knitted tie, shirt and cardigan, which seems very well behaved and suitably clean cut.

THE FLIGHT JACKET

We like it when Mr Lonnie Lynn, aka Common, wears a tux, but we’re even bigger fans of this outfit. Here, he has opted for a classic piece of military-inspired casualwear: the MA1 flight jacket (recognisable by the zip-pocket on the arm). But he’s made it a little bit more dressy for this illustrious occasion by keeping to a minimal colour palette of black on black. Good for him.

THE SOUVENIR JACKET

Is it, strictly speaking, a souvenir jacket if it’s not covered in embroidery? No, it’s not. But Mr Miles Teller’s tasteful satin number certainly tapped into the current trend for such pieces, exemplified by the likes of Saint Laurent and Japanese brand Kapital. Host Mr Kevin Hart wore not one, but two such jackets: one in leopard print and one emblazoned with a swooping hawk, but unfortunately we couldn’t find a picture of him not surrounded by dancing bears. It was that kind of night.
