Three pieces of outerwear to keep you warm (and stylish) this winter.

We spoke recently about preparing our wardrobe for colder weather. Indeed, although we may well be saying farewell to sunny days, we’re looking forward to welcoming fresh options when it comes to clothing – whether it be Chelsea boots, cardigans or cashmere gloves. But, when winter truly comes, when the first blast of icy air hits your cheek, the most important part of your wardrobe is undoubtedly a good coat. It is the first layer of defence, after all (and, therefore, by definition, the first thing people will see. First impressions and all that.) And, given you’ll likely only have the capital and/or inclination to invest in one or two, you’ll be stuck with little choice for what can be – in the UK at least – up to five months of biting weather. Which means you must choose wisely. No pressure, then. To help you in this grave and life-saving investment, we have put together a quick edit of our favourite winter coats this season, along with some styling suggestions. Thank us later.

If you consult the Oxford English Dictionary, you will find a reference for a variation of the peacoat which dates back to 1717. It has survived hundreds of years, after being popularised by the British navy, making the leap from nautical to normalcy to become a go-to coat on city streets, and for good reason. Firstly, there is nothing like a double-breasted coat to add extra warmth and comfort in winter. Secondly, the peacoat has benefited from various design iterations, having been tweaked and refreshed by different brands over the years. This version by Kent & Curwen, for example, features a rather grand shearling collar that adds an air of sophistication and fun to proceedings. And the back belt ensures it fits a little more snugly than most. But a peacoat will never be as trim as, say, a long single-breasted overcoat. So you have more room for manoeuvre with other layers. Take advantage of the looser fit by wearing it over a thick sweater, such this red zip-up one by Irish brand Inis Meáin. On your feet, try these chunky Brunello Cucinelli boots.

Single-breasted and with a neat lapel, this coat by Acne Studios is a more formal proposition than the peacoat above. However, the Swedish brand has crafted it to have a slightly unstructured silhouette, giving it a more relaxed feel in comparison to tailored single-breasted coats. This is rather welcome for when you need something versatile to go the distance over the colder months. What’s more, the striking camel tone will give your outfit a pop of colour (a trend for this season, if you’re that way inclined). Continue the theme underneath with a purple mélange knit by Ami – a shining example of Mr Alexandre Mattiussi’s 1980s-themed AW show. Keep things relaxed but refined on your feet with a pair of neat white sneakers.

If you’re more of a traditionalist and you prefer a tailored, more classic cut, look no further than Stella McCartney this season. This wool overcoat is evidence of the designer’s past experience shadowing Savile Row stalwart Mr Edward Sexton. Exacting fit aside, it has a pleasing moss-green colour, which is bolstered by the texture – alpaca, fuzzy mohair and silk – giving the coat an easy-on-the-eye, cosy feel and appearance. Although you could easily wear this coat in a more formal fashion – with a suit or a blazer perhaps – we have decided to keep things simple with a plain grey sweater by Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, and some blue jeans. Whatever you decide, excessive layering is not your friend under a coat that fits so snugly.
