Five of the most Instagrammable places in the Golden Gate city.
The MR PORTER US team is back in San Francisco this week. Whenever we return to a city we like to visit different places rather than hit up the all-too-predictable tourist hotspots. (Do you need to see another picture of the Golden Gate Bridge, for example?) So ahead of this visit we asked a few local photographer friends – some professional, some hobbyists – to highlight their favourite, and most photogenic, spots around the city that we should check out while in town.
Tartine Manufactory

**595 Alabama Street. **Recommended by Mr Eric Luis
Mr Eric Luis, 24, has lived in the Bay Area all his life. He works full-time as a lab technician for a biotech company, but takes photographs in his spare time.
“This bakery doesn’t look much from the outside, but the line snaking out the door at the weekends will tell you you’re in the right place,” he says, so go during the week if you can. “The inside is extremely photogenic. It’s all light wood, high ceilings, paper lanterns and custom crockery from the neighbouring Heath Ceramics [see below]. The food lives up to the hype. It’s great at any time of day, but brunch is the thing. Try the coddled eggs with trout roe, horseradish, za’atar and grilled bread. You can see them baking their famous breads all day – they have an extensive bread menu.”
Heath Clay Studio

2900 18th Street. R****ecommended by Ms Madeline Lu
Ms Madeline Lu, 39, is a full-time photographer and blogger who moved with her family to San Francisco from Germany last year. She is based in Silicon Valley, 30 minutes from the city centre.
“The beautiful studio space of Heath Ceramics is located in the heart of the Mission district, around the corner from Tartine Manufactory. Heath’s creative studio, showroom, newsstand, production and administrative offices are all in the same building, which allows it to integrate the design and production processes. People can see exactly how the products they purchase are designed and crafted. It does everything from dinnerware and tableware to tiles and good designs for the tabletop and home. It’s hard to walk out without buying something.”
Flora Grubb Gardens

**1634 Jerrold Avenue. **Recommended by Mr David Ou
Mr David Ou, 26, was born and bred in Oakland where he works as a freelance advertising project manager. At the weekend, he and his girlfriend often make the short trek to San Francisco.
“Flora Grubb Gardens is a local secret for folks like me looking to get away from the distractions and noise of the city,” he says. “I love coming here to grab a cup of Ritual Coffee as I potter around, and invariably pick up a plant to add to my growing collection. I always find inspiration in concept shops such as Flora Grubb that focus on the experience.”
Anchor Distilling

Photograph by @spottedsf
**705 Mariposa Street. ****Recommended by Ms Leslie Santarina **
Ms Leslie Santarina is a freelance photographer and the editor of Spotted SF, which features local shops, cafés and restaurants in the city and from her travels.
“The newly opened Anchor Distilling Tasting Room is one of the few places you can drink on an open rooftop while enjoying gorgeous views of the city,” she says. “There’s also an edible garden up there. America’s first craft gin post-prohibition was created right here 20 years ago.”
Heath Ceramics

2900 18th Street. Recommended by Mr Sothear Nuon
Mr Sothear Nuon, 30, is a full-time wedding and lifestyle photographer who grew up in the Bay Area and now lives in Oakland.
“Heath Ceramics is definitely a gem in San Francisco,” he says. “I love that its production warehouse is in the same building as its San Francisco showroom, so you can look through the windows to see the products being made but then see them beautifully merchandised in the store. It gives you a literal window on the craftsmanship that goes into each piece. And it’s very photogenic.”
