Who had the best menswear game in 2024? With so many memorable looks to mull over, identifying the guys who stood out this year is an impossible task. And anyway, as a certain cartoon dog once taught us, parents don’t pick favourites. So, we’ve left it to our peers to make their case instead. Whose eveningwear should’ve picked up its own award? Which men pulled together shirts, shoes and – what? – shorts in iconic fashion? Who carved out their own signature style? Below, the year’s best-dressed men, compiled by the best of us.

The Emmy-winning, Tony-, Golden Globe- and Oscar-nominated actor, playwright and director Colman Domingo offers up a lot of clout both on- and off-screen. And there is a case to be made that his real talent lies in his promotional duties – with styling from Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald. Sure, he was there to represent Sing Sing, The Madness or his turn as Batman in a scripted podcast, but did anyone else this year look as good on a red carpet? The Die, Workwear! and MR PORTER columnist Derek Guy thinks not.

Derek Guy: “Colman Domingo is one of those rare figures who understands tailoring, can creatively express himself through attire, and is never overshadowed by his clothes. Some men have one or two of these qualities; Domingo has all three. The gold-coloured Valentino Garavani suit at the Critics’ Choice Awards wasn’t just the best outfit of the year, it may have been the standout of the decade. It had drama, verve and tremendous presence. Yet, and as ever, the focus was on him. People will look back at that photo in 50 years and continue to be inspired.”

From Harris Dickinson’s dashing dress in The King’s Man to his pitch-perfect performance as a male model in satirical comedy Triangle Of Sadness, the clues were there. But to send something up so adeptly, you first have to know it. And, in 2024, the star of The Iron Claw and Babygirl, who works with stylist Ben Schofield, is steadily making slick tailoring his signature, according to Zak Maoui, style director of The Gentleman’s Journal.

Zak Maoui: “Harris Dickinson has been impressing on the red carpets and at press junkets with his Hollywood-leading-man meets boardroom-top-guy tailoring – proving that the suit is far from dead. Even when he’s taking things in a more off-duty direction at the Babygirl Venice Film Festival photocall, it involves impeccable Bottega Veneta tailored trousers and a pinstriped shirt.”

For some, becoming a father is the moment when personal style becomes less of a priority. When you have young children to deal with, sartorial standards can slip. Not so with A$AP Rocky, who, if anything, amped up his fashion nous. Working with long-term stylist Matthew Henson, the rapper made Bottega Veneta in particular his own, the Hong Kong-based stylist, art director and creative consultant Declan Chan argues.

Declan Chan: “I love when he wears Bottega [Veneta] – it takes someone with a certain personal style to pull it off and execute it so perfectly. I love how he carries loud accessories, too, and how they make sense on him. I also like how he balances his outfits with denim – his sense of style is very in line with how I personally mix and match my looks.”

“Just because you look pretty good in whatever you wear doesn’t give you license to wear anything you fancy,” says the writer, model and creative consultant Jason Jules. “Unless, of course, you’re Daniel Craig and you’re seemingly hell-bent on burying your Bond, James Bond image once and for all.” Craig’s post-007 glow up continued apace in 2024 thanks to LOEWE and its creative director Jonathan Anderson in particular. Having shaken (not stirred) off the British secret agent, the actor became a poster boy for reinventing yourself in your fifties with a little help from his new stylist Taylor McNeill.

Jason Jules: “Becoming himself again is perhaps his most challenging role to date. When asked who he felt should be his successor in the role of Bond, his reply was clear and unequivocal: “I don't care,” he said. This strong sentiment is something Craig seems to have carried through to his image. Gone is that smooth, suave and elegant look, replaced by a rugged, unkempt casualness. He’s grown his hair out, his face is unshaven, and his clothes have a glorious, dishevelled look about them. It’s an unconventional and uncompromising look that radiates authenticity. What I get from this new Craig look is that it’s possible to be stylish and to have fun at the same time.”

Previously seen in Informer, 1917 and Industry, Nabhaan Rizwan flexed his acting chops this year in Kaos, Netflix’s retelling of Greek and Roman mythology. And the aloha shirts of Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility and festivity, did look good on him. But then so did the bold choices made by the actor in real life. He certainly caught the film producer Aaron Christian’s eye.

Aaron Christian: “[Rizwan] has such an interesting and eclectic sense of style. He is one of those rare individuals who can effortlessly shift between styles and still make it work. He experiments with a variety of shapes, silhouettes, colours and patterns, yet it always feels natural. I love how brave he is when it comes to style choices – you can tell that clothes and the art of dressing truly bring him joy. As they should!”

In one sense, the key to Paul Mescal’s style is its everyman appeal – “gloriously unfussy”, as GQ’s deputy global editorial director Adam Baidawi puts it. And yet, under the guidance of stylist Felicity Kay, the Gladiator II star’s look is so distinctive that you could instantly gauge who thousands of lookalikes descending on Dublin in November were pretending to be. And that now-immortalised gym outfit? “That was all Paul,” Kay recently told Baidawi.

Adam Baidawi: “In 2024, there was a Mescal moment for every menswear head. I loved his penchant for teeny-tiny, sexy Cartier tanks and quad-bearing Gaelic shorts. Maybe you were into his incredibly chill boxers-and-loafers look on the Gucci front row? Either way, every fit in every context – red carpets, his GQ cover, walking to the gym – screamed the same thing: getting dressed is supposed to be fun. In this age of precision-engineered fashion, Mescal is a brilliant reminder that, sometimes, it ain’t that deep. Sometimes, you should just strap in and enjoy the ride.”

Dressing well is, of course, in the blood when it comes to Cruz Beckham. But there’s more on display than good genes – and jeans. “Cruz exemplifies the difference between style and fashion,” says the fashion critic and consultant Anders Christian Madsen. “As a young man growing up in the spotlight, you see his style evolving before our eyes like his parents before him. He’s inherited Victoria and David’s inquisitive sense for dressing.”

Anders Christian Madsen: “This year, I’ve loved seeing him experiment with different genres and ages – from 1940s drape suits to 1970s trucker suits and 1990s grunge – all of which illustrates a genuine interest in fashion history and how those ideas can mirror his self-expression. He wears everything he puts on with charm and authority, and, for a 19-year-old, that’s pretty rare.”

Blake Abbie: “Bad Bunny is a dresser. I love that he takes a dress code seriously and plays with his style. Take his Met Gala look by Maison Margiela from earlier this year. The man loves an accessory, too – particularly sunglasses or a hat. But to wear not just a hat and some shades, but then also a pair of gloves for the Margiela ensemble was perfection. Often people over-accessorise, but somehow Bad Bunny always has the exact perfect balanced look, even on his days off, chilling.”

“The best-dressed man of 2024? Or just any given year… Tyler, the Creator is certainly someone with such an innate sense of style that he is hard to overlook,” says MR PORTER’s Buying Director Daniel Todd. Sure, Tyler had an album, Chromakopia, to promote, and therefore a new stage persona to debut. But somehow his thoroughly thought-out looks are “put together in a way that doesn’t seem contrived or like some sort of cosplay,” Todd says of the music multi-hyphenate who has never worked with a fashion stylist.

Daniel Todd: “This year brought with it heavyweight collaborations that really capture Tyler’s clout within the industry. And while the evolution of his personal style has been played out largely in the public eye, he has rarely put a foot wrong. The authenticity and personality in his looks mean he always looks cool.”

Beka Gvishiani: “When it comes to Haider Ackermann, the combinations, mix of colours and textures, fits and layers, those hidden colourful socks or small scarves make everyday basics stand out. And obviously, not shockingly, I love all the blue shades.”

In April of this year, Emmy-winning and Bafta-nominated British actor Josh O’Connor made his mark in the fashion world with his LOEWE-clad appearances on the Challengers press tour. The Crown star goes way back with the brand, having been chosen by Jonathan Anderson to be the first ambassador under his creative direction back in 2017. Now working with stylist Harry Lambert (who played a crucial role in Harry Styles’ sartorial evolution), O’Connor has a penchant for retro silhouettes both on and off the red carpet, says the NET‑A‑PORTER and MR PORTER Content Director, Alice Casely-Hayford.

Alice Casely-Hayford: “Whether he’s off-duty in a jacket, effortless knit, jeans and adidas Gazelles, or taking to the red carpet in tailoring and statement shoes (from chunky lavender LOEWE sneakers to floral biker boots at the Met Gala), Josh O’Connor wears everything with a nonchalance that makes each look even cooler. He puts his own irreverent spin on classic menswear codes, making his look equally striking and accessible.”
