We live in a messed-up reality where trans women, in the UK at least, can now be barred from using a women’s toilet. Perhaps it is karmic realignment, then, that means that this world – and not the one with the mushroom plague, nor the other one with all the multiverses, nor the other-other one far, far away with all the Muppets – gets a real hero like Pedro Pascal. In London to support Thunderbolts*, as well as the trans community, The Last Of Us actor demonstrates that if you’re going to wear a statement piece, political or otherwise – in this instance a Conner Ives T-shirt – it pays to keep the rest of your outfit muted. Message received.

We had a lot of time for the sequins-and-boas-era Harry Styles. But, right now, we’re really enjoying the singer and actor’s segue into normcore. Not just normcore, but just-slipping-out-for-a-copy-of-the-Racing-Post mundanity that somehow, in his hands – shoved in pockets, naturally – still sparkles like a mirror ball. Obviously, a pair of Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses will help you stand out while being inconspicuous. The jacket – in an iridescently ordinary blue, collar popped – works as hard as a chore coat should. The leather loafers, meanwhile, have seen some things. It’s middle of the road, but also streets ahead.

Meanwhile, at the Met Gala, playwright Jeremy O Harris took the dress code – “Tailored For You”, a nod to the museum’s latest exhibit, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style – to its logical conclusion. And wearing Balmain, with a one-of-a-kind ring by the British jeweller Benjamin Hawkins, he really landed the look of a 19th-century Black dandy – with perhaps a shade of Hamilton. For all the buzz surrounding Wales Bonner’s adidas collabs, the intersection that is truly key to understanding the designer is her deft application of Black history and culture in her work. The Central Saint Martins graduate was rightly all over the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala, and perhaps nowhere better showcased than on Sir Lewis Hamilton, himself a co-chair of the event. The custom suit and matching beret married formalwear with a military bent, with the Ferrari driver taking the racing line when it came to the theme.

Given that Colman Domingo is a recurring presence on our best-dressed list, when he was also announced co-chair of this year’s Met Gala, we knew it was going to be major. And the perfectly executed, layered Valentino Garavani look certainly didn’t disappoint. He chose something he truly felt he belonged in – an embellished cloak in royal blue (the shade his mother thinks he looks best in) and an equally well-thought-out suit from the Roman house. An oversized dotted flower brooch contrasts nicely with the jacket’s check pattern, while a loosely tied ribbon – also with polka dots – replaces a classic tie.
