We’ve reached that point of the year when we’re really getting into the nitty gritty of cold-weather dressing. Wherever you turn, all you’ll see are winter coats, more-or-less thorough layering skills, seasonally appropriate footwear. But, most importantly, lots of suits, or revisitation thereof, courtesy of the latest film premieres and red-carpet events. And this will hopefully serve as handy inspiration for the party season and the kind of sartorially tricky soirees that will soon fill up your social calendar. But how do you make yours stand out for the right reasons? From Jeff Goldblum’s feathery approach to Jonathan Bailey’s silk get-up, here’s who to note from this past month.

Sometimes, all you really need to make a style statement is a good coat. And doesn’t Malcolm Washington – not even the only Washington on our list this month – know that? The rest of his look (white T-shirt, light-wash jeans and Chelsea boots) is simple but well thought out. However, it’s the peacoat that we’re really here for. It’s slightly oversized and chunky enough to be considered a winter must-have. As for the colour, the rich chocolate hue adds a tad of formality to the get-up, while the light-blue buttons inject a touch of light-hearted colour without having to make any real effort.

From yellow brick roads to similarly shaded silk shirts, it’s hard to know where the magic of Oz begins and ends. Jonathan Bailey’s Dolce&Gabbana white suit, worn here to the premiere of Wicked in the other Oz (Australia), is elegantly breezy, befitting the actor’s role in the film. It’s formalwear, yes, but you suspect that it could comfortably accompany you to bed. The pin adorning the waist is not wasted on us, either. And as for ruby slippers? These are far more clickable.

While others have used the past month to shout colours at you (“MUSTAAARD!” anyone?), the actor John David Washington makes a quietly confident case for a rich reddish purple. We’d put it somewhere between eggplant and plum, although the key is there’s a touch of both. The suit offers a regal mauve while the shirt, bow tie and trims complement in a deep maroon, with a mixture of sheens for added impact. In all, it makes for a classy point of difference at a black-tie event. And as colour schemes go, we’ll hear no shade thrown at this tonal shift.

Harris Dickinson means business. He’s currently in theatres with Steve McQueen’s war drama Blitz, and he’s soon to return to the big screens in A24’s complex erotic thriller Babygirl, alongside Nicole Kidman. In the process, he’s coined winter’s best haircut – a boardroom-appropriated baby mullet he debuted back in October – and come into his own sartorially. The pinstripe suit he wore at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards (complete with colour-coordinated striped shirt and tie) wouldn’t look out of place in a 1970s office, and neither would the glossed loafers beneath the flared trousers. A vintage Presidential Rolex Day-Date with a Stella Oxblood stone dial, channels the same retro mood, rounding off the fit.

Currently working his magic as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in Wicked, here Jeff Goldblum seems to be transgressing fantasy franchises, decked out for a stint guarding the Wall from White Walkers. Sure, a shoulder pelt isn’t for everyone, but there are other lessons to be gleaned. Like: play to your strengths, in this case, building a palette around that signature silver quiff. And especially when incorporating a statement item, classic menswear pieces, such as the Burberry tie, can have a levelling effect. In short, there’s still some serious substance, even if you pull back that fleecy curtain.

When it comes to the Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor Colman Domingo, there’s a sense that, for him, turning up in anything less than an exceptional outfit would be what takes real effort. Here, this precisely engineered all-black ensemble offers so much more than just one colour. The Gucci monogram of the tuxedo jacket for one, not to mention the pussy bow. It’s the ideal backdrop for the glint of golden jewellery and a Cartier dress watch. But above everything else, it’s the gleaming smile that edges it.

Dress for the season you want, not for the one you’re in. And if you do it as well as Danny Kasirye, no one can stop you. We’re talking about the daisies, of course, which are the focal point of this skilfully executed, monochrome outfit. The wide-leg trousers balance proportions. Elsewhere, he’s swapped a tee for a short-sleeved shirt and tie, and accessorised with silver jewellery and a pair of statement red, calf-hair, square-toe boots. It’s only right he gets his flowers.

Even when a suit jacket and matching trousers are non-negotiable, in the current menswear climate, everything underneath is still up for grabs. Recent years have seen the spread of vests, gaping sheer shirts and even bare chests under tailoring. The comedian and Saturday Night Live fixture Bowen Yang, meanwhile, treads his own path with an embellished mesh tank – it’s like a pop of personality peeking through. The hexagonal glasses and relaxed, open DB reveal a man who knows which shape goes where.
