THE JOURNAL

Three of the best AW16 sheepskin coats to keep you cosy and comfortable this season.
Feeling your mood slump alongside the atmospheric temperature? Fear not. Incredibly cosy and comforting to wear, shearling coats also have the benefit of adding a rugged edge to your look, which will go some way to disguise your emotional state as the nights draw in this winter. This is a trend that needs some thought, however, because you’ll want to avoid looking like Mr John Motson, or indeed an actual woolly sheep. Luckily though, there are a wide variety of ways to wear shearling this season, given the tactile fabric is available via everyone from Balmain to Berluti. In fact, this season may well mark the first time that there is genuinely a shearling coat out there for every man, whatever his style. Read on for our edit of three of the best, and what to wear them with.
FEELING SHEEPISH
Shearling (or sheepskin, as it’s otherwise known) for many might seem like a bit of a bold choice. But the AW16 collections have many subtler options, like this faux-shearling and corduroy piece from record-label-turned-cult-fashion-label Maison Kitsuné – ideal for those who just want to be a bit warmer without making a big sartorial statement. Keep it low-key and play up the vintage vibe by wearing it with A.P.C.’s slim-fit washed-denim jeans. And if you really want to commit to the off-duty-musician style, throw on a graphic tee underneath.
CHECK IT OUT
Feeling a little bit fragile? Looking to inject a rough-and-ready aesthetic into your weekend wardrobe to give you a bit of a boost? Try this Saint Laurent faux-shearling jacket. With its hunting-style cut and deep red and black plaid, this coat says you mean business, and the lined patch pockets will ensure your hands are kept warm in between stints chopping wood, stalking prey in the woods, or indeed swiping for an Uber to brunch if that’s more your style. Continue the Western theme with a handcrafted denim shirt from artisanal Japanese heritage brand Chimala.
GO FULL-PELT
Now over the past few seasons, we’ve all had to comes to terms with the fact that 1970s style is now cool again. It’s taken a bit of time, but we can now say we’re firmly on board with most of the key pieces from the era (minus the flares, obviously), or at least the artfully adapted versions currently on offer. And no piece sums up the trend better than this panelled Loewe piece. Made from 100 per cent shearling, the coat’s regular fit and longer length give it a chic and sophisticated edge. Avoid going too over-sized on this, or indeed pairing it with anything too complex, or you might end up – as one member of the MR PORTER team discovered – looking somewhat like a gingerbread house. This Eidos cable-knit mock neck sweater will work nicely.
