Six Trends To Know For Spring

Whether you’re feeling blue, sporty, or just want to look smart, here’s a primer on the key looks for spring/ summer 2015.

If the sum of a season’s trends provide you with a view to where culture is heading, what should one make of a world in which denim, florals, baggy trousers and safari are some of the addends? The truth is that we’re emerging out of an epoch that’s been remarkably sedentary. Admit it, around about 2004 you got broadband, joined Facebook and buckled into your home office to poke people for half a decade. When you got fed up with that pizza you ordered, padded downstairs and binge-watched The Sopranos. The smartphone you picked up in 2007 promised to make you an on-the-go creative powerhouse, but soon you were back on the sofa, changing the time and date settings so you could have another go at Candy Crush while you tried to find something – anything – to watch on Netflix.

But now, as we hit the middle of the 2010s it seems it’s time for a backlash. You may have recently noticed your friends beginning to pepper their status updates with the running trophies they’ve just earned on Nike+. Half the office now cycles into work. The other half disappears to the gym at lunchtime. When people go on holiday, they take their GoPros and film themselves leaping off buildings and generally releasing all that pent-up energy. Yes, the primary motivation behind it all is the need to look good on Instagram, but this has had the knock-on effect of making physical activity a style statement.

Which is a roundabout way of explaining why the clothes featured on MR PORTER this spring/ summer 2015 have a certain lightness and practicality to them. The influence of performance wear on designers across the board continues to grow, with brands such as Neil Barrett, Kolor and Bottega Veneta leading the charge. But there’s also a slew of references to the history of active and leisurewear, including nods to the breezy styles of the 1950s (the decade that invented casual sports clothing) and a crucial canonisation of that most adventure-ready piece, the sports sandal. Add to that a range of pieces – including more and more penny loafers and a slew of rough-and-ready safari jackets – that not only look good but make getting dressed easier and you have the sartorial keys to the hale, hearty and thoroughly photogenic lifestyle of 2015.

Full Denim

It’s a hero’s fabric, the textile of rail workers, rockers, miners and the mavericks that ruled the Wild West. And this season we can’t get enough of it, whether it’s in selvedge jeans, soft chambray shirting or vivid overdyed work jackets. The frontrunner here is Christophe Lemaire, whose offering includes denim variations on the blouson, T-shirt and chino, but options also come from Japan’s Chimala, iconic LA denim brand Ron Herman, (both new arrivals to MR PORTER) and a new collection from New York’s Jean Shop, launching exclusively on MR PORTER. Wearing several pieces at once, for a denim-on-denim special, is not only allowed but encouraged.

Sports Influence

The line between contemporary designer clothing and sports togs gets ever more blurred. The blurring comes from two directions: suits and blazers appear in slouchy fits and fabrics traditionally associated with work-out gear – see Kolor’s neoprene tailoring and Bottega Veneta’s wrinkled double-breasted jackets. Meanwhile varsity jackets and sweatpants are reinvented in wool, leather and neoprene. For the best of both worlds, mix and match, pairing a directional, sports-inspired piece with classic chinos or a button-down Oxford shirt.

Penny loafers

In addition to being the kind of shoes you can quite literally kick off at the end of the day, the penny loafer is a timeless style that will never grow old. Whether it’s a classic model from J.M. Weston or a pleasingly deconstructed number by visvim, they are as relaxed as they are refined. Wear with slightly cropped trousers and a silk shirt from Saint Laurent.

Sports sandals

In a grand aesthetic double take, fashion is finally cottoning on to the appeal of sports sandals. Though present on many catwalks, the style is executed with perfection by Japanese brand Suicoke, one of the latest arrivals on MR PORTER. Wear them with a loose, spread-collar shirt and rolled-up linen trousers to add a dash of athleticism to your poolside look.

Safari

Channel your inner-adventurer with a range of safari jackets and crisp khakis from brands including Saint Laurent and Maison Kitsuné. Whether you’re planning a jaunt in the desert or a trip to your local pub, this look is just tough enough. Keep it eclectic and Bohemian (rather than stiff and military), slinging it over a loose-fitting tee and skinny black jeans.

Florals

With brands including Saint Laurent and Valentino looking to mid-century counterculture for inspiration, heady, exotic prints of flowers and foliage make a return to the spring collections in slouchy silk shirts, tees and even tailoring and shorts. Rebellious rather than androgynous, these prints can be worn with plain cotton chinos or outerwear in earthy shades to strike a beat-worthy devil-may-care attitude.
