High-waisted trousers have been, ahem, on the rise for a while now. Once ubiquitous among the skinny, hip-height silhouette and rock star sensibility, men’s trousers are now bigger, wider, and baggier than ever – like the Madness song, but with more fashion.
There is nary a runway in Paris or Milan that does not feature high-waisted tailored trousers in some capacity (see everyone from Prada and Dries Van Noten to Lanvin and Versace) and it’s one that’s been round for long enough that it’s likely here to stay for a good while. And why shouldn’t it? High-waisted trousers, like the type Sir Sean Connery wore exceptionally well in Dr No, or the kind of navel-high “dad” jeans favoured by Mr James Dean.
When a new trend comes along, of course, it’s one thing to appreciate its existence, and quite another to pull it off for yourself. Still, as style dilemmas go, this is a relatively straightforward one. There are simply a few tips we recommend you follow.
01.
Tuck it in
02.
Don’t belt up
If your trousers fit you well and you want to show off their expert tailoring, eschew the belt. It’s still smart and will put focus on the precision of the tailoring without splitting up your silhouette. It’s an ultimately flattering look. If you really can’t bear to go beltless, try this Prada pair that come with a retro-style buckled belt that is cut from the same tech-jersey fabric as the trousers.
