THE JOURNAL

Our global roundup of who wore it well last month.
Good news: it’s no longer necessary for us to scour the openings of an envelope variety or hide behind parked cars outside Chiltern Firehouse. May marked the opening of peacock season 2015: the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Biennale, the Chelsea Flower Show – this sort of event is the natural habitat of our favourite On the Town stalwarts. See how they rose to the challenge of the impending summer with this month’s best looks, below.
Mr Alasdhair Willis

While in California a “double-double” is common parlance for an In-N-Out Burger delicacy, on the streets of New York Mr Alasdhair Willis interpreted it to mean wearing a pair of double monk-strap shoes and a double-breasted jacket, the neat, slim cut of which gives a flattering length to his torso. The fact that he’s chosen to wear it with a T-shirt also keeps it city rather than City. But the best take-home here is the effortless colour palette – beige, white and navy not only work beautifully together but will never go out of style.

Mr George Lamb

“What should I wear to the Chelsea Flower Show?” Not a question one normally asks at the pub without expecting some witty retort. Regardless, here is the answer, supplied by departing BBC 6 Music DJ Mr George Lamb. The reason this outfit is a textbook example is that it combines the palette of a classic British sporting look (khaki tweed jacket, wool trousers, crumbling country house) with a sharp, contemporary simplicity, most noticeable in the slim cut of the jacket and slightly pointed shirt collar. It’s also the first time an umbrella has made it into On the Town this year, so kudos to Mr Lamb.

Mr Hugh Jackman

Mr Hugh Jackman looks so dashingly Sinatra-esque in this impeccable tuxedo that it’s hard not to imagine the Vegas Rat Pack just out of shot. Unfortunately, though, this outfit was not slung on for a musical number but a mobile phone commercial the actor was shooting in New York last month. However, whether Mr Jackman himself insisted on the classic, sleek, golden-age-of-Hollywood dimensions of this simple black dinner suit or it was the work of a talented costume designer, it was a good choice. The slim but not too fitted cut and perfect trouser length make the most of Mr Jackman’s height while softening the impact of his imposingly muscular physique.

Mr Luca Calvani

Regular readers of On the Town may not be familiar with ex-model and actor Mr Luca Calvani, whose English language roles so far, in the likes of Sex and the City and The Bold and the Beautiful have been, well, of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it variety. The same, on the other hand, cannot be said of this outfit, which he wore for the photocall of upcoming movie The Man from U.N.C.L.E., directed by Mr Guy Ritchie. While his more famous co-stars Messrs Armie Hammer (ie, the Lone Ranger) and Henry Cavill (ie, Superman) have a super-intimidating pair of CVs between them, Mr Calvani held his own in the style stakes on this occasion, pulling off this relaxed, double-breasted blue suit (worn with an artlessly crumpled, open-necked shirt) with typical Italian charm. We particularly like the straight cut of the trousers, which add a certain gravitas to Mr Calvani’s slim frame.

Mr Nicholas Hoult

Ever since he starred in Mr Tom Ford’s impeccably stylish movie A Single Man, Mr Nicholas Hoult has been something of a poster boy for young men in suits, flying the flag for contemporary tailoring at every possible opportunity, and with a high success rate. Here he’s up to these old tricks again, opting for a very slim two-piece variety in grey, worn with monochrome accessories. Granted, this is not the most exciting colour palette, but Mr Hoult has played to its strengths with his neatly styled hair and slightly forbidding, FBI-worthy black sunglasses for an overall effect of “stylish secret agent”. Which is no bad thing.

Mr Vincent Cassel

There are two main battlegrounds of style at the Cannes Film Festival: the premiere, when you demonstrate how well you scrub up in a tuxedo, and the photocall, where you confirm that, yes, you’re just as wonderful off duty. At this year’s edition, Mr Vincent Cassel was the winner of the latter category, sauntering in to promote Mr Matteo Garrone’s fantasy flick Tale of Tales in this smart-casual ensemble. It’s great because it mixes things up – the penny loafers have rubber sneaker soles, the jacket is worn with an open shirt, and the indigo slubbed-cotton trousers are not quite jeans but not quite chinos either.

Mr Pharrell Williams

Circular shades. A Hawaiian shirt. A biker jacket. Washed blue denim. Yes, it’s back to the 1950s in the sartorial world of Mr Pharrell Williams, a man formerly governed by a large and tyrannous hat, which seems to have been deposed. Vive la révolution! Fond as we are of Mr Williams’ more adventurous outfits, it’s great to see him throwing something together that your average non-gazillionaire might be able to pull off. The combo of white tee, jeans and leather jacket has been a sure-fire hit since Mr Marlon Brando, but there are extra touches here that make it more than that – in particular the jazzy black lace-ups and patches on the jacket, which add a boyish charm to the whole ensemble.

JR

A key tip for pulling off a busy print: act nonchalant. Yes, you might be electrifying everyone’s eyes with a statement Junya Watanabe jacket covered in patches and bright white zigzags, but you’ve got to be a little cool about it. French street artist JR, spotted here at the ISTANBUL ’74 arts and culture festival, has got this attitude down to a T, particularly because he has completed the look as simply as possible, with a pair of unwashed jeans in a matching indigo shade and sand-coloured desert boots for a bit of subtle contrast. The lean-to pose and mirrored wall, of course, also help.
