From Mr Ryan Gosling to Mr Donald Glover – the chaps who set the sartorial standard this month.

Fun facts about September: ancient physicians deemed it a good month to consume pomegranates and goat’s milk; it’s the 4,497th most common name for girls in the US; and it’s the month to cast aside summer casuals and start getting serious about menswear again. As the nights drew in, these were the men who wore it well.

Mr Gosling has been out and about on the promotional meet and greet for First Man, a biopic of Mr Neil Armstrong, and we’re reminded once again that what he doubtless considers a small sartorial step would represent a giant leap for the majority of his red-carpet peers. Taken individually, any of these elements – the electric-blue suit, the low-cut graphic V-neck, the nod-to-Nasa dog-tag – would be considered a bold, not to say elevated, choice. Put them together and you’ve got a look that hovers somewhere between the stratosphere and zero gravity. Four words: Out. Of. This. World.

The name’s Fukunaga. Cary Fukunaga. Apologies, but we couldn’t resist a nod to the fact that the True Detective and Maniac director has stepped in to direct the next James Bond movie, and he’s already channelling some of that secret-agent suavity in a suit that deploys a very on-trend micro-check to winning, if not quite cat-stroking-villain-vanquishing, effect. Couple it with a contrast-pattern tie and a pair of smooth evening slippers, and you’ll be ready, like Mr Fukunaga, to saunter from Casino Royale to upscale dry-martini outlet with all the shaken-not-stirred insouciance you can muster.

Mr Glover is, of course, a noted envelope-pusher, whether he’s creating cutting-edge TV or racking up gazillions of YouTube views with contentious Childish Gambino videos. And he proves to be no less so in the style stakes, embracing the 1970s-inspired tailoring cuts and patterns that have been a feature of the season’s more audacious catwalks. His Gucci suit has all the pumped hallmarks: unabashed chalkstripes; nipped-in waist; conspicuous trouser flare; and lapels you could land a light aircraft on. The nicely shonky bow tie and Pac-Man ’fro are the icing on the gateau, if we’re running with the 1970s theme.

Mr Huisman played ruthless warrior Daario Naharis in Game Of Thrones, and can currently be seen in Netflix’s horror The Haunting Of Hill House – and appropriately, his spirited choice of eveningwear puts the sword to the competition. How so? It’s the canny choice of midnight-blue suit, which not only accentuates Mr Huisman’s lithe figure, but actually appears darker than black in artificial light – all the better to point up the sharp monochrome contrasts of Mr Huisman’s perfectly proportioned cuffs, collar and pocket square. He’s not the acting regent of the Bay of Dragons for nothing, you know.

His old man may be famous for apercus such as “If it bleeds, we can kill it”, but the younger Mr Schwarzenegger takes a more relaxed approach to his life, his art and, indeed, his tailoring. This look is the epitome of smart-casual, with an unstructured blazer in of-the-moment check teamed with a pristine white tee, and the natty grey chinos loosened up with ostentatious turn-ups and box-fresh minimalist trainers. Hasta la vista? Not when the vista’s as easy on the eye, and as easy to wear, as this.

Would you find us spouting “Bohemian Rhapsody” clichés as Mr Malek swaps _Mr Robot _to play Mr Freddie Mercury in this year’s hotly anticipated biopic? You should know us better than that. So we’ll just say that he cuts a fine silhouetto of a man (whoops) in one of this season’s statement pieces, a checked topcoat, simply offset in easy-come easy-go, little-high little-low style by a white tee, pin-sharp trousers, polished Oxfords and a look that says, “Any way the wind blows, doesn’t really matter, to meee, to meee…”

He’s promoting his film Beautiful Boy at the Toronto Film Festival, and Mr Chalamet is doing his best to live up to the billing – although the onlookers, particularly those waving the cut-out heads of Mr Chalamet, already seem unassailably convinced. He’s certainly not hurting his cause with his choice of eveningwear: a narrow-cut tuxedo by Mr Haider Ackermann, complete with creeping foliage (you’ll find the same pattern on tees and sweats at Mr Ackermann’s page on the MR PORTER site), accessorised with a simple black tee and some kick-ass boots. All of which makes Mr Chalamet the definition of a budding style icon.

“I’m about being discreet,” Mr Cassel once mused, “what they call the French touch, whatever that means. Low profile and somehow elegant without being flashy.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves, especially when, as here at Milan Fashion Week, Mr Cassel’s “French touch” consists of an impeccable navy crewneck, a pair of irreproachable track-pant chinos, some beyond-pristine sneakers, the last word in aviators, and the best salt-and-pepper display this side of a Le Creuset cruet set. Add the formidable presence of the new Mrs Cassel, model Ms Tina Kunakey, and we’ve got as much “je”, “ne”, “sais” and “quoi” as we can handle.
